4 Ways to discover Mpumalanga - Culture, Curios, Adventure & Breathtaking Scenery

Mpumalanga, home to famous Kruger National Park, is also known for its stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage and exhilarating adventures.

Here are 4 ways to add exciting dimensions to your Kruger safari holiday by immersing yourself in top Mpumalanga tourism attractions:

1. Discover Mpumalanga’s Cultural Villages – Go on an immersive journey into the traditions of Mpumalanga by visiting cultural villages like Shangana Cultural Village and Nyani Cultural Village near the picturesque town of Hazyview. These villages showcase the customs, dances, and folklore of the region’s indigenous people, including the Shangaan and Swazi communities. Tour traditional homesteads, participate in storytelling around a fire, and try your hand at local crafts. Watch vibrant performances by local artists and storytellers that brings to life the history and heritage of the local people.

2. Shop at vibrant curio markets – Mpumalanga’s curio markets are rich in hand-made artistry. Graskop and Hazyview markets are top spots for purchasing locally crafted items, from colourful beaded jewellery to hand-carved sculptures and woven baskets. You’ll find unique, authentic pieces that are as practical as they are stylish. Engage with artisans as they share the stories behind each creation, providing a deeper connection to the area’s culture and people.

3. Visit the Graskop Gorge Lift Company – This is one of Mpumalanga’s top adventure destinations, offering a thrilling 51-meter descent down a cliffside in an open-air lift. Once you’re in the gorge, a network of walkways and suspension bridges takes you through lush Afromontane forests, rich with biodiversity. Thrill-seekers will be tempted by the Big Swing bungee jump and ziplining.

4. Take in Mpumalanga’s scenic picnic spots and waterfalls – The sheer beauty of Mpumalanga is on show at its many waterfall picnic spots. Make time for stops at Berlin Falls, Lisbon Falls, and Mac Mac Falls, where you can admire cascading waters and the rugged terrain. Each site has unique lookout points, making them ideal for family picnics or a quiet moment in nature with sweeping views of the Blyde River Canyon and lush valleys below.

From cultural exploration to nature adventures, Mpumalanga offers a perfect mix of discovery and excitement. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, or an adrenalin rush, Mpumalanga’s heritage and natural wonders are life-enriching and unforgettable.

I could not recommend the Kruger Gate Hotel more! Our experience from start to finish was flawless. We were greeted at Skukuza airport and driven through Kruger National Park to get to the hotel. That meant that even our taxi journey to the hotel featured animal sightings. The staff at the hotel were so efficient and got us checked in so quickly, even though we were a large family/friends group. We stayed for four nights and decided to do 1x full day safari, 1x morning safari and 1x afternoon safari. This allowed us to explore the National Park but also enjoy the beautiful facilities at the hotel. The safaris were excellently organised and the guides were incredible. We saw 4 out of the big 5 (sadly no leopards, although we had two very near misses where we had just missed a leopard sighting) and countless other animals. In our down time we enjoyed the three swimming pools, one of which overlooked the river and where we could see elephants on the opposite banks, and our wonderful rooms. The group was split between Deluxe Rooms and the self catering chalets. The rooms were stunning and the chalets were excellent for larger groups. The food was AMAZING! Every night we were treated to an extensive buffet in the boma with amazing singing. The ambience was incredible. On the two mornings we weren\'t on game drives we enjoyed the buffet breakfast, which was also delicious. While there a large number of our group booked treatments at the spa, which we all raved about. The trip was to celebrate my 30th Birthday and we were a large group visiting from the UK. I would like to thank everyone at the Kruger Gate Hotel for making our stay so special. I really hope that I return again in the future. Thank you again!
