Kruger Big 5 Safari

Your Unique Kruger Big 5 Safari Experience

The beauty of your stay at Kruger Gate Hotel is your incredible access to the Big 5 animals and game-rich reaches of the southern Kruger Park. We are situated on the bank of the Sabie River, less than a minute’s drive from the Paul Kruger Gate – a safe access point to the Park that offers the most direct route to the Skukuza Camp, known as the ‘Capital’ of the Kruger Park, and to the Skukuza Airport. With a history dating back to 1898, the Kruger National Park is Africa’s second-oldest game reserve, and at almost 20 000 km2 (over 7500 sq mi) is one of the continent’s largest conservation areas. Kruger is world-famous for its spectacular abundance of wildlife and outstanding safari experiences. It is home to 147 species of large mammals, a greater diversity than any other game reserve in Africa. With 517 recorded avian species, Kruger is also a bird-watching paradise.

The game drive routes that lead from Paul Kruger Gate offer guests some of the best Big 5 safari experiences the Park has to offer. The area is known for its regular sightings of Kruger National Park Big 5. Lion, Leopard, Elephant and Giraffe, and the thorn thickets are a favourite refuge of the critically endangered Black Rhino. The mixed woodlands and stretches of grassland sustain herds of Impala, Blue Wildebeest, Burchell’s zebra and Cape Buffalo. This concentration of prey animals supports healthy populations of magnificent African predators including Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Wild Dogs and Spotted Hyena. Apart from the self-driving game drive option which includes convenient car hire from our reception, there’s a host of big 5 safari options on offer from Kruger Gate Hotel. You have the choice of joining up with other game drives or booking private guided safaris.

Kruger Gate Hotel All-Day Safaris

An all-day Kruger Gate Hotel guided safari is a more than 10-hour epic adventure that enables you to range farther into the Kruger National Park, covering extensive ground and increasing your opportunities for thrilling sightings. Though it doesn’t often happen in just one day, you’ve still got your best chance of seeing all of the Big 5 on a full day safari. It’s a premium game drive experience for those wanting to feel truly immersed in the wilderness. This is also a good option for birdwatchers who want to traverse diverse habitats so that they can spot as many bird species as possible. With more time on your hands, you can linger at the Park’s scenic waterholes, picnic spots and enjoy unhurried interludes with wild creatures.

This safari experience starts before the break of dawn so that you can have the life-enriching experience of witnessing the sunrise in the wilderness. It’s a remarkable opportunity to revel in the beauty of wild South Africa as you traverse a diversity of game-rich habitats from lush, forested riverbanks to rocky outcrops and dry thornveld thickets. You can expect multiple sightings of Elephant, Giraffe, Impala, Kudu, Burchell’s Zebra, Warthogs, Hippo and Blue Wildebeest. You also have a fair chance of encountering Cape Buffalo, Lion, Leopard and Spotted Hyena, and will count yourself lucky if you also spot Wild Dog, Cheetah and the critically endangered Black Rhino.

There’s almost non-stop spectacular birding and those on an all-day safari are likely to see an array of birds of prey and waterbirds, as well as bushveld specials such as Whitefronted Bee-eaters, Greyheaded Shrikes, Yellowbilled Hornbills, Redbilled Woodhoopoes and Arrowmarked Babblers. You’ll return to the sanctuary of the Kruger Gate Hotel at sunset, in time to relax in the quiet, evocative dusk at the Pool Bar & Viewing Deck before a reviving, fire-lit dinner at the Lapa Restaurant. Make memories by finishing off an unforgettable safari day at the Shilovu Bar with a convivial nightcap of creamy Amarula Liqueur, made from the delectable fruits of the local Marula tree.
