Hazyview to Kruger Gate, plan your perfect holiday

Many of our Kruger Gate Hotel guests opt for self-driving holidays so that they have more flexibility when it comes to exploring both the Kruger Park itself, and the fascinating surrounds.

While the Kruger is without doubt the premier Mpumalanga visitor experience, there are many other attractions in this scenic province of South Africa, including the world-famous Panorama Route, which includes the town of Hazyview.

Interesting facts about Hazyview

If you are planning your next Kruger Gate Hotel stay, and are thinking about the self-driving options, then the sub-tropical farming town of Hazyview is going to be on your radar. Known as a gateway town to the southern region of the Kruger National Park, Hazyview is not just on your route, but a picturesque stop, full of interesting attractions.

  • The town, famous for its lush macadamia nut and banana plantations is set on the slopes of the Drakensberg Mountains. The iconic Sabie River runs through the area, forming the Sabie River Valley with its last stand of lush, indigenous forest. If action adventure is your thing, you can zip-line here.
  • Hazyview is a smooth 4 and a-half-hour drive from Johannesburg along the major N12 and N4 highways to Mpumalanga’s main city, Mombela. From there, you travel about 65km along R40 roadway to arrive at Hazyview. For those flying into Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and hiring a car, the airport is 56km from the town via the R538 route.
  • Hazyview was established formally as a town in 1959, as part of the planning of the Selati Railway Line. The area has a fascinating history that includes the Mapulana, Tsonga and Swazi peoples, whose cultural impacts are still strong today. Like many other towns of Mpumalanga’s lowveld, Hazyview was also shaped by the gold rush of the late 1800’s, though it served more as trading post and railway stop. Due to its proximity to the Kruger National Park and Skukuza Camp, the town’s existence has always been entwined with wildlife and tourism.

The route from Hazyview to Kruger Gate

I could not recommend the Kruger Gate Hotel more! Our experience from start to finish was flawless. We were greeted at Skukuza airport and driven through Kruger National Park to get to the hotel. That meant that even our taxi journey to the hotel featured animal sightings. The staff at the hotel were so efficient and got us checked in so quickly, even though we were a large family/friends group. We stayed for four nights and decided to do 1x full day safari, 1x morning safari and 1x afternoon safari. This allowed us to explore the National Park but also enjoy the beautiful facilities at the hotel. The safaris were excellently organised and the guides were incredible. We saw 4 out of the big 5 (sadly no leopards, although we had two very near misses where we had just missed a leopard sighting) and countless other animals. In our down time we enjoyed the three swimming pools, one of which overlooked the river and where we could see elephants on the opposite banks, and our wonderful rooms. The group was split between Deluxe Rooms and the self catering chalets. The rooms were stunning and the chalets were excellent for larger groups. The food was AMAZING! Every night we were treated to an extensive buffet in the boma with amazing singing. The ambience was incredible. On the two mornings we weren\'t on game drives we enjoyed the buffet breakfast, which was also delicious. While there a large number of our group booked treatments at the spa, which we all raved about. The trip was to celebrate my 30th Birthday and we were a large group visiting from the UK. I would like to thank everyone at the Kruger Gate Hotel for making our stay so special. I really hope that I return again in the future. Thank you again!
