African animals - spotting the Big 5 in Kruger

Spotting the famous Big 5 African animals is on the bucket-lists of millions and millions of people across the world.

But it’s not just about wishing – every year, the power and mystique of the Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant and Rhino ignite global travel to the African continent, and South Africa’s Kruger National Park is a premier destination for these Big 5 safaris.

Encompassing two species of Africa’s ‘Big Cats’ and three species of megafauna, the lure of the Big 5 is widespread and enduring, even though your chances of seeing them all on one safari holiday can be slim. In vast wildlife refuges such as Kruger, you never know what you might see when you set out on a game drive.

Why guided game drives increase your chances of spotting the Big 5 in Kruger

While many visitors to the Park, especially locals, prefer the flexibility of self-driving, there are advantages to choosing guided game drives, such as the ones we offer at Kruger Gate Hotel.

Our open-air safari vehicles with customised high seating offer excellent visibility, increasing your chances of spotting African animals, especially in areas where the bush is dense. But the real benefit is your access to our trained game guides, who have so much experience spotting the Big 5. They not only know the best routes and favourite animal hangouts, but they also understand animal behaviour throughout the times of day and seasons and can often accurately anticipate where certain species may be spotted. All this expertise can help you find a Big 5 species, as well as spot and identify many of the other wonderful African animals that you can see in Kruger.

Giving yourself the best chance of encountering the Big 5 in Kruger

If you are set on seeing the Big 5, another important consideration is where you choose to visit in the Kruger, which is a vast National Park spanning two provinces of South Africa. The central and northern regions of Kruger lie in Limpopo and include large tracts of Mopane woodland, as well as some other interesting biomes. The southern region, dominated by thornveld, is situated in Mpumalanga and is widely regarded as the most game-rich area. Kruger Gate Hotel is located right at the Paul Kruger Gate, which gives you ideal access into the heart of the southern Kruger. All the Big 5 African animals are present in the region, even the rare Black Rhino. The Sabi River area, where we are situated, is also particularly good for Leopard sightings, the most elusive species of the Big 5.

Keeping your Big 5 quest in perspective

Every African safari in the Kruger is a unique experience. The thrill of the wilderness is that nothing is staged or curated. Many guests come with the aim of spotting the Big 5, and some are lucky. However, everyone goes home having witnessed something wonderful. One of our game guides likes to tell the story of taking guests out on an all-day safari and they were determined to tick the Big 5, which they did. On the way back to the gate, he stopped at a waterhole as a huge hippo close by rose out of the water with its vast jaws open, providing an astonishing and awesome spectacle. At the end of their safari adventure, the guests were happy they had seen the Big 5, but the surprise hippo sighting turned out to be their favourite, most unforgettable moment on safari!

I could not recommend the Kruger Gate Hotel more! Our experience from start to finish was flawless. We were greeted at Skukuza airport and driven through Kruger National Park to get to the hotel. That meant that even our taxi journey to the hotel featured animal sightings. The staff at the hotel were so efficient and got us checked in so quickly, even though we were a large family/friends group. We stayed for four nights and decided to do 1x full day safari, 1x morning safari and 1x afternoon safari. This allowed us to explore the National Park but also enjoy the beautiful facilities at the hotel. The safaris were excellently organised and the guides were incredible. We saw 4 out of the big 5 (sadly no leopards, although we had two very near misses where we had just missed a leopard sighting) and countless other animals. In our down time we enjoyed the three swimming pools, one of which overlooked the river and where we could see elephants on the opposite banks, and our wonderful rooms. The group was split between Deluxe Rooms and the self catering chalets. The rooms were stunning and the chalets were excellent for larger groups. The food was AMAZING! Every night we were treated to an extensive buffet in the boma with amazing singing. The ambience was incredible. On the two mornings we weren\'t on game drives we enjoyed the buffet breakfast, which was also delicious. While there a large number of our group booked treatments at the spa, which we all raved about. The trip was to celebrate my 30th Birthday and we were a large group visiting from the UK. I would like to thank everyone at the Kruger Gate Hotel for making our stay so special. I really hope that I return again in the future. Thank you again!
