Plan your family bush getaways: Essential guide

There’s something truly special about experiencing the African bush with your family: watching elephants cross the road at golden hour, hearing lions call at dusk, or sitting together under a sky full of stars. These are moments that stay with you long after you’ve returned home.

This guide walks you through everything you need to plan family bush getaways the whole family will love, whether you’re a South African family planning a long weekend escape or international travellers experiencing Africa’s wildlife for the first time.

Choosing your family safari destination in South Africa

Why Kruger National Park works so well for families

Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga is one of the world’s great family safari destinations, and for good reason. Its excellent infrastructure, incredible wildlife diversity, and range of nearby accommodation options make it genuinely accessible for families of all shapes and sizes.

Spanning an area the size of a small country, the park moves from riverine forests along the Sabie River to open grasslands, giving you varied landscapes and wildlife sightings throughout the year.

Accessibility and safety

Unlike more remote wilderness areas, Kruger’s well-maintained roads and established rest camps make it easy to navigate with children in tow. The Paul Kruger Gate entrance puts you right in the heart of prime wildlife territory, while keeping luxury accommodation within easy reach. Safety protocols for vehicle-based game viewing are well established, so families can focus on the experience rather than the logistics.

Family-friendly accommodation options

Luxury hotel or self-catering: Which is right for you?

The best choice really depends on your family’s needs and travel style.

Self-catering suites

Families with young children

Flexible meal times, familiar foods, budget control

Family Rooms

Budget-conscious families

Cost-effective, essential amenities

Luxury hotels along the Sabie River offer the added bonus of natural wildlife viewing right from a viewing deck, you might spot a family of hippos without even leaving your sun lounger.

What to look for in family accommodation

When booking, keep an eye out for these practical essentials:

  • Swimming pools with appropriate safety features
  • Kids’ activity options
  • Flexible dining options
  • Spacious family rooms or interconnecting suites

Age-appropriate safari activities

Game drives for every age group

Ages 3–7: First-time explorers

Shorter morning drives of two to three hours work best for little ones: the temperatures are cooler, animals are more active, and attention spans are better managed. Prepare some educational ranger programmes and wildlife identification games to help keep young minds engaged.

Ages 8–15: Young adventurers

Older kids tend to thrive on full-day drives with picnic stops, photography workshops, and junior ranger programmes. Bush walking experiences (where permitted by SANParks operators) add a real sense of adventure.

Multi-generational groups

A mix of optional activities, flexible schedules, and comfortable vehicle arrangements means everyone can participate at their own pace, grandparents included.

Beyond the game drive

Great family bush getaways offer more than wildlife viewing. Round out your days with:

  • River decks for relaxed afternoon game watching
  • Cultural village visits
  • Star-gazing sessions
  • Nature craft workshops
  • Swimming and downtime between drives

Practical planning basics

What to Pack

Clothing:

  • Neutral-coloured safari clothing
  • Layers for cool mornings and warm afternoons
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sun protection for all ages

Family extras:

  • A basic first aid kit
  • Entertainment for kids during travel
  • Binoculars in different sizes
  • Camera gear to suit different skill levels
  • Snacks for younger travellers

Budgeting for your trip

Family safari holidays can suit a range of budgets with the right planning. A few things worth factoring in:

  • Seasonal pricing during South African school holidays
  • Group discounts for larger families
  • All-inclusive packages versus individual bookings
  • Transport between accommodation and park gates
  • Gratuities for guides and lodge staff

Health and safety

Medical considerations

  • Kruger falls within a low-risk malaria area. This is something to note if you’re travelling with young children or elderly family members.
  • Standard travel insurance that covers adventure activities and medical evacuation is also a sensible investment.

Wildlife safety

A few simple habits go a long way toward keeping everyone safe and comfortable on safari:

  • Stay in the vehicle during game drives unless a guide advises otherwise
  • Follow your guide’s instructions without exception
  • Respect animals’ space and natural behaviour
  • Keep noise levels low during sightings
  • Teach children the park’s rules around food and waste

We have more practical tips in our ‘kids on safari guide’.

About Kruger National Park

Established in 1898, Kruger is one of Africa’s oldest and most celebrated conservation areas, stretching across Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces in northeastern South Africa. The park is home to over 500 bird species, 147 mammal species, and an extraordinary range of plant life.

The southern Kruger region (accessible via Paul Kruger Gate) offers the highest wildlife density and the most developed visitor infrastructure, making it the natural choice for families. The Sabie River system creates year-round water sources that draw wildlife in remarkable concentrations, and those animal sightings have a way of becoming a family’s most treasured holiday memories.

Research also suggests that early exposure to nature through experiences like these has a lasting impact on children’s environmental awareness and conservation values, something worth keeping in mind as you plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our stay at Kruger Gate Hotel was absolutely fantastic and far exceeded our expectations. Although it is officially a 4-star hotel, it truly delivers a 5-star experience.

The facilities are excellent, beautifully integrated into nature while still feeling luxurious and comfortable. Our chalet was spacious, cozy, and very well maintained. The hotel atmosphere is simply magical.

The three swimming pools are wonderful and perfect for relaxing after game drives. One of the highlights of the stay was definitely the breathtaking view over the Sabie River during dinner — watching hippos in the river while eating was an unforgettable experience.

The restaurant was also excellent overall. While the buffet itself was slightly below the standard of the rest of the hotel, it was still very enjoyable and absolutely worth it because of the amazing live attractions and atmosphere during dinner.

We would also like to give a special thank you to Donation from the reception team, who was exceptionally kind, professional, and welcoming throughout our stay.

The only negative point was our guide during the full-day game drive, but he was clearly very ill and even needed medical assistance afterward, so we truly believe this was an unfortunate exception and that the safari experience is normally much better.

Our stay was absolutely fantastic. We spent four nights at the hotel and enjoyed every single moment. The rooms were spacious, beautifully designed, and very comfortable. In general, the entire hotel complex impressed us with its tasteful architecture and the way it blends perfectly into the surrounding nature. Perhaps that is also why you can often spot harmless animals wandering around the property, which added to the unique atmosphere.

The food was excellent, with a wide variety of options to suit every taste. There was always something for everyone, and the entertainment offerings created a wonderful overall ambiance. What truly stood out was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff throughout the entire resort — everyone made us feel genuinely welcome.

A special highlight was the pool deck overlooking the river, where animals could occasionally be seen nearby, making the experience even more memorable.

We also booked two full-day safaris directly through the hotel with the guides Culture and Chris. Both guides made the game drives incredibly entertaining and shared fascinating insights about the wildlife and the surrounding area. They always did their best to position us in the best spots for animal sightings, which made the game drives truly unforgettable. We never wanted the day to end.

Overall, we would book this hotel again without hesitation. We are certain this will not be our last visit.

Kruger Gate Hotel continues to offer the very best experience for those venturing into Kruger National Park - accommodation, facilities & service and especially the staff make this at top of the list. We atill meet the resident bushbuck and warthog, as well as ververt monkeys and baboons, wandering the grounds but this is part of the pleasure.

We booked a 3 night stay in their newly renovated luxury room and it was nothing short of fantastic. Its spacious, bright and clean. The property itself is beautiful, looks like a massive treehouse. Its also big and there are lots of areas to explore. Everything is neatly kept and clean. There is a little shop that is open into the evening incase you want snacks and drinks. It also has safari essentials like maps, info guides and binoculars. Breakfast and dinners were absolutely amazing. Its a nightly rotating menu with lots of classic South African foods. Everything from springbok, kudu, crocodile, pap and wors, bobotie, malva pudding. We opted for shuttle pick up and drop offs from the airport which was super easy. We also booked a guided safari one day, and rented a car for a self drive safari the following day. Being able to book both directly from the hotel was very very convenient. Would absolutely recommend this place to anyone and cant wait to visit again.

HP. Abendessen (Buffet) war hervorragend. Mit das beste was wir hatten. Auch das Frühstück war super. Draussen sitzen direkt am Busch. Zimmer modern eingerichtet (nicht unbedingt afrikanisch). Haben hier uns mal 2 Tage gegönnt und würden nächstesmal garantiert länger bleiben - Daumen hoch!! ;)

Couldnt recommend it hotel more! The location is perfect (just a few meters from Paul Gate) and it’s beautifully surrounded by nature (we were even welcomed by a family of elephants on the road as we arrived). The entire staff was incredibly kind and attentive. Breakfast was rich and delicious, and dinner was a true experience in itself, both because of the setting and the live music.
