Kruger to Victoria Falls: The ultimate travel guide

Planning a trip from Kruger to Victoria Falls? Discover the best routes, travel tips, visa advice, and itinerary ideas for an unforgettable African adventure.

Waterfall Surrounded by trees and hills

Travelling from Kruger to Victoria Falls covers roughly 1,500–1,800 km depending on your route, crossing South Africa, Zimbabwe, or Zambia. Most travellers fly via Johannesburg or take a multi-day road trip through Botswana or Zimbabwe. The journey pairs two of Africa’s greatest natural wonders and is best planned as a 7–14 day itinerary combining safari and sightseeing.

Why combine Kruger and Victoria Falls?

Few journeys in Africa match the sheer contrast and grandeur of pairing the Kruger National Park with Victoria Falls. One offers the quiet drama of the African bush — lions padding through golden grass, elephants crossing dry riverbeds. The other delivers raw, thundering spectacle: one of the world’s largest waterfalls straddling the Zimbabwe–Zambia border.

Together, they form a natural bucket-list circuit that draws high-end travellers from across the globe to southern Africa year after year.

The good news: Kruger is accessible year-round, and so is Victoria Falls. Each season offers something distinct — the dry months bring concentrated wildlife activity near water sources, while the wetter months paint the landscape vivid green and fill the Zambezi River to full roar.

Kruger to Victoria Falls: Your route options

There is no single “correct” route. Your choice depends on your budget, time, and preferred mode of travel.

Option 1 — Fly via Johannesburg (Fastest)

The most popular option for international travellers and those on tighter schedules.

  •         Fly from Hoedspruit (Eastgate Airport) or Skukuza Airport to Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International
  •         Connect to Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) in Zimbabwe or Harry Mwanga

Nkumbula International Airport in Livingstone, Zambia

  •        Total travel time: approximately 4–6 hours including connections

This is the recommended route for luxury travellers who want maximum time at each destination with minimum transit fatigue.

Option 2 — Road trip via Zimbabwe (scenic & immersive)

For travellers who want to experience the landscape between the two landmarks:

  •         Depart the Kruger region heading north through Limpopo
  •         Cross into Zimbabwe at Beitbridge Border Post
  •         Drive through Bulawayo and Hwange National Park toward Victoria Falls
  •         Estimated driving distance: approximately 1,600–1,750 km
  •         Recommended over 3–4 days to allow stops at Hwange

This route allows you to add a Hwange game drive to your itinerary — Zimbabwe’s largest national park and home to large elephant herds.

Option 3 — Road Trip via Botswana (The Long Way Round)

A less-travelled option that adds Botswana’s Chobe National Park to the journey.

  •         Head northwest from Kruger through Limpopo into Botswana
  •         Spend a night or two in Chobe (famous for its elephant population)
  •         Cross into Zambia at Kazungula and continue to Livingstone
  •         Estimated distance: approximately 1,800–2,000 km
  •         Best suited for self-drive adventurers with 5+ days for the transit leg

Step-by-step: Planning your Kruger to Victoria Falls trip

Follow this sequence to build a seamless, stress-free itinerary.

Step 1 — Choose your base in Kruger

Begin your journey anchored in luxury at the Hazyview/Phabeni Gate area. Deluxe Rooms & Suites at Kruger Gate Hotel place you steps from the park boundary, giving you immediate access to the Kruger ecosystem without unnecessary transfers.

Step 2 — Decide on your travel method

Use the route comparison table below to match your travel style. If time is limited, fly. If experience is the priority, drive.

Step 3 — Arrange visas and border documentation

South African citizens do not require a visa for Zimbabwe or Zambia (check current regulations with your nearest embassy before travel). International visitors should verify visa requirements for each country they transit. The KAZA UniVisa covers both Zimbabwe and Zambia and is available on arrival at major entry points.

Step 4 — Book accommodation at both ends

Luxury lodges near Victoria Falls book up quickly, particularly during peak school holiday periods. Secure accommodation 3–6 months in advance for premium properties.

Step 5 — Plan your game drive experiences

At the Kruger end, game drives and wildlife experiences at Kruger Gate Hotel are the centrepiece of any stay. At Victoria Falls, boat cruises on the Zambezi and helicopter flights over the falls are the signature activities.

Step 6 — Allow buffer days

Build at least one buffer day into your itinerary at each destination. Weather delays, border crossing times, and spontaneous wildlife sightings (which are never guaranteed) can all affect schedules.

Step 7 — Confirm travel insurance

Ensure your policy covers multi-country travel in southern Africa, including emergency medical evacuation — a standard inclusion for bush travel.

Best time to travel between Kruger and Victoria Falls

Kruger Gate Hotel positions the Kruger National Park as a year-round destination — and rightly so. Each season offers a genuinely different experience.

  •  May to September (dry season): Vegetation thins out, making wildlife more visible near water sources. Victoria Falls is lower but still spectacular, and the mist is less obstructive for viewing.
  • November to April (wet season): Lush, green landscapes. The Zambezi swells and Victoria Falls reaches peak volume — the roar and spray are extraordinary. Kruger’s bush is dense and birdlife is exceptional.

Neither period is “better.” They are simply different. Your ideal time is whichever fits your schedule.

What to expect at Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls — known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya (“The Smoke That Thunders”) — straddles the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia along the Zambezi River. It is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

At peak flow, the falls stretch approximately 1,708 metres wide and drop up to 108 metres. The volume of water and the resulting mist can be seen from kilometres away.

The town of Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe side) and Livingstone (Zambia side) both offer luxury accommodation, fine dining, and curated experiences. Choose your base based on your entry point and preferred atmosphere — Victoria Falls town has a more established tourist infrastructure, while Livingstone offers a quieter, more local feel.

Extending your stay: Luxury at the Kruger end

Before you set off on the broader southern African circuit, your time in the Kruger region deserves full attention.

Kruger Gate Hotel’s Kudyela Restaurant and River Boma offers an authentic taste of African cuisine in an outdoor setting overlooking the Sabie River — a fitting send-off before a long journey north. After dinner, unwind at the Treetop African Spa with treatments inspired by African botanicals and healing traditions.

For corporate groups or families travelling together, the hotel’s conference and private event facilities can accommodate pre-trip briefings, group dinners, or tailored departure experiences.

Packing Essentials for the Kruger–Victoria Falls Circuit

  •         Neutral-coloured clothing for game drive environments (khaki, olive, tan)
  •         Waterproof layer — essential near Victoria Falls at any time of year
  •         High-SPF sunscreen and wide-brim hat — both destinations have intense sun
  •         Binoculars — a quality pair transforms wildlife viewing
  •        Universal travel adapter — South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia use different plug types
  •        Copies of all travel documents — stored separately from originals
  •        US dollars — widely accepted in both Zimbabwe and Zambia alongside local currency

The Kruger Gate Hotel was an incredible experience that i can highly recommend to any tourist and local traveling to the Kruger National Park.

The location is perfect and right by the entrance to the Nature Reserve. The accommodation is very clean and luxurious with gardens and environment that makes you feel that you are in the heart of Africa with views directly into the park. The staff are very friendly and professional and the food for both the breakfasts and dinners was exceptional and always fresh and delicious.

The African energy over here is very powerful and spending time in this hotel with all the people land and animals greater than a five star experience.

I really can’t recommend this enough, everything was perfect and Culture was the best guide we could’ve asked for, be sure if you have culture as your guide no animal is stealthy enough to escape his hawk eyes. I still don’t know how he managed to see the leopard and its cub. Absolutely amazing safari.
Also the location of the hotel is amazing we were there for 10 minutes looked around and just saw 2 elephants out the gate at the pool. Cannot beat this probably the best hotel I’ve ever been in!

I stayed for three nights.
To begin with, the hotel has a wonderful atmosphere; its design harmonizes with nature, making you truly feel like you are in Africa.
The facilities are all clean, well-maintained, and comfortable.
Watching the sunrise and the starry sky from the pool deck was an incredible experience.
You might even encounter animals right on the hotel grounds, which adds to the enjoyment.
The staff are all friendly, and the restaurant offers a wide variety of delicious food.
The safari guides are skilled at spotting wildlife.
Since July is winter, it was colder in the mornings and evenings than I had expected, so warm clothing is essential.
It was a fantastic stay. I would love to visit again.
