Things to do in Hazyview: Outside-park adventures

Discover the best things to do in Hazyview beyond Kruger National Park, from zip-lining and quad biking to cultural tours, scenic drives, and local markets.

African bamboo craft market

Hazyview offers a rich range of outside-park activities including white-water tubing, zip-lining, quad biking, cultural village tours, and scenic canopy tours — all within minutes of Kruger National Park. Visitors can also explore local markets, art galleries, and the Sabie River corridor. Hazyview is a year-round destination with something to offer every type of traveller.

Why Hazyview is more than a park gateway

Hazyview sits at the edge of the Lowveld, straddling the Sabie and Sand rivers in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Most visitors arrive with Kruger National Park on their minds — and rightly so. But the town and its surrounds offer a compelling calendar of adventures that stand entirely on their own merit.

Whether you are travelling as a couple, a family, or a corporate group on a “bleisure” retreat, Hazyview rewards those who look beyond the park gates.

Outdoor & adventure activities

White-water tubing on the Sabie River

The Sabie River winds through lush subtropical forest before skirting Hazyview’s southern edge. Tubing — floating downriver on inflated rubber rings through mild rapids — is one of the most popular outdoor pursuits in the area.

It suits all fitness levels and requires no prior experience. Operators typically run trips year-round, taking advantage of the river’s consistent flow through every season.

Zip-lining and canopy tours

Several operators in the greater Hazyview area offer zip-line experiences through indigenous forest canopies. These courses range from beginner-friendly platforms to longer, faster lines for adrenaline seekers.

The bird’s-eye perspective of the Lowveld forest is genuinely spectacular. Expect to see fever trees, fig trees, and — if you are fortunate — vervet monkeys in the canopy below.

> Important note: Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, whether inside or outside Kruger National Park.

Quad biking through the lowveld

Quad biking trails around Hazyview traverse red-dust farm tracks, riverine forest, and open grassland. Trails are graded by difficulty, making them accessible to first-timers while still offering challenge for experienced riders.

Most operators provide helmets and safety briefings. Trips typically last between one and two hours.

Cultural & heritage experiences

Shangaan cultural village tours

The Shangaan people have inhabited the Lowveld for centuries. Cultural village experiences near Hazyview offer an authentic window into traditional music, dance, food preparation, and storytelling.

These tours are run by community-based operators and are a meaningful way to connect with the region’s living heritage. Many include a traditional meal — an excellent complement to the contemporary African cuisine available at [Kudyela Restaurant and River Boma](/dining/) back at Kruger Gate Hotel.

Hazyview craft markets and art galleries

The town hosts several craft markets selling hand-carved wooden sculptures, beadwork, woven baskets, and painted fabrics — all produced by local artisans. Prices are generally negotiable, and purchases directly support Lowveld craftspeople.

A handful of established galleries in and around Hazyview showcase fine art inspired by the African bush, wildlife, and landscape. These are worth an unhurried browse, particularly on a rest day between game drives.

Scenic drives and nature escapes

The Panorama route day trip

Hazyview is the ideal base for exploring the Panorama Route — one of South Africa’s most celebrated scenic drives. Key stops include:

  •         Blyde River Canyon — one of the world’s largest green canyons
  •        God’s Window — a viewpoint overlooking the Lowveld escarpment
  •         Bourke’s Luck Potholes — cylindrical rock formations carved by river erosion
  •         The Three Rondavels — dramatic dolomite pillars rising from the canyon

The full route covers approximately 160 km and is comfortably done in a day from Hazyview.

Perry’s Bridge Reptile Park

Located on the R40 just outside Hazyview, Perry’s Bridge Reptile Park houses Nile crocodiles, African rock pythons, monitor lizards, and dozens of snake species. It is a controlled, educational environment — ideal for families and curious travellers who want a close encounter with Africa’s reptilian wildlife.

Step-by-step: Planning your Hazyview activity day

Follow this sequence to get the most from a full day of outside-park adventure in Hazyview:

  •   Start early (06:30–07:00). Book your most physically demanding activity — quad biking or tubing — for the morning when temperatures are cooler and energy is high.
  •   Mid-morning (09:30–11:00). Transition to a canopy or zip-line experience. Most operators are clustered along the R536 corridor and are within 20 minutes of each other.
  •   Lunch (12:30–13:30). Visit a local craft market or farm stall on the way back toward town. The Hazyview area has several excellent roadside farm stalls selling subtropical fruit, biltong, and artisan preserves.
  •   Afternoon (14:00–16:00). Opt for a cultural village experience or a gallery visit. These are lower-intensity activities well suited to the warmer part of the day.
  •   Sundowner (17:00–18:00). Return to Kruger Gate Hotel in time to unwind at the African Spa or enjoy a riverside sundowner at the Pool Bar and viewing deck overlooking the Sabie river before dinner.

Where to stay: Your Hazyview base camp

Choosing the right base matters as much as choosing the right activities. Kruger Gate Hotel is positioned directly at Paul Kruger Gate — it is one of the most popular and safe entrances to Kruger National Park — placing guests within minutes of both the park and Hazyview’s activity corridor.

The hotel’s Deluxe Rooms & Suites are designed around the concept of sanctuary: a place to genuinely rest between adventures. Interiors draw on African heritage materials and textures without sacrificing the modern comforts that high-end travellers expect.

For corporate groups, the hotel’s conference and events facilities provide a full business infrastructure within a bush setting — making it a natural fit for team-building retreats that combine Hazyview’s outdoor activities with structured professional programming.

Conservation and responsible travel in Hazyview

Hazyview sits within a sensitive ecological corridor linking Kruger National Park to the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. Responsible travellers should:

  •         Choose community-based operators where possible — cultural village tours and craft markets directly fund local livelihoods.
  •         Avoid single-use plastics when visiting natural sites along the Sabie River.
  •         Respect wildlife and vegetation on all outdoor activities, including quad biking trails that cross natural areas.
  •         Support conservation-aligned accommodation — Kruger Gate Hotel’s ethos is rooted in African heritage and ecological responsibility.

Hazyview is a year-round destination. There is no single “best season” — each month brings a different character to the Lowveld landscape, from the lush green of summer to the golden, clear skies of winter.

I had a wonderful stay at the Kruger Gate Hotel. The room was very nice and very comfortable with a lot of storage. The breakfast was good and the dinner buffet outdoors was excellent with many different local dishes, and amazing ambience with the fire pits and the local singers as well as the hotel staff singing ‘happy birthday’ to guests. The game drives arranged though the hotel were amazing and we saw all the Big 5 and many of the other animals and birds as well. The spa was wonderful as well. The infinity pool and viewing deck are truly amazing. As the hotel borders the Kruger National Park, we were regularly visited by elephants, nyala, water buck, and some hippos as well as a croc could be seen. The truly amazing allure to this property, however, is the staff. I cannot say enough good things about everyone. Everyone made us feel welcome and well taken care of. Special requests were honored with diligence. I would definitely book this property again.

After a week in lodges in remote areas, we really enjoyed our almost week-long stay at the Kruger Gate Hotel. While it\'s not a small safari lodge, it is a very nice hotel a short distance away from Kruger National Park. The hotel is also very beautiful architecturally.

For us, the Kruger Park was the best of both worlds - close to safari activities, but with the conveniences that a larger hotel has to offer. I have seen complaints in other reviews that it is a bit impersonal and packaged, but we did not feel that way at all. It is big - I think they told me there were 144 rooms - but the staff took great care of us during our stay.

Breakfasts and dinners are done buffet style. We thought the quality of the food was very good except for the desserts at dinner. Game drives arranged through the hotel were excellent. The hotel has some nice amenities, like a putt-putt course and tennis courts. We enjoyed our day at the spa, the highlight of which was getting up from my massage, looking out the window, and seeing an elephant maybe 30 meters away.

We would definitely stay here again.

A comida nós amamos, tudo delicioso e fresco.
