Highlights of South Africa’s celebrated Panorama Route

While the thrills of a Kruger safari are without doubt the main event of a stay with us, many of our guests are also keen to explore some of the other nearby scenic attractions of Mpumalanga.

The journey across the spectacular Drakensberg Escarpment to the Lowveld is known as the Panorama Route. It takes in Africa’s second largest canyon, unique geological formations, an abundance of waterfalls and charming historical towns frozen in time. Beautiful and fascinating, these destination highlights just beyond our doorstep, deliver high quality Instagrammable moments and enrich your Kruger safari holiday experience.

From our location right at the Paul Kruger Gate of the Kruger National Park, it is an hour and a half drive to the picturesque tourist town of Graskop. Many of the Panorama Route’s top highlights are to be found in close proximity to Graskop. Here are some that are not to be missed:

Nature’s creative marvel – Bourke’s Luck Potholes – This unique geological wonder has been formed over centuries by the meeting of a river of joy, the Blyde River and a river of sorrow, the Treur River. In the place where these two waterways dynamically merge in an affirmation of life itself, their swirling waters have sculpted deep cylindrical shapes into the vividly coloured rock. Walkways and bridges provide a variety of vantage points where you can admire and photograph Nature’s spectacular artistry.

A spectacle of rock, river and sky – Blyde River Canyon – Spanning 25 kilometres in length and reaching depths of up to 750 metres, this lush canyon with its rugged cliffs is a feast for the eyes. There are various easy to access visitor viewpoints including at the Three Rondavels which resemble giant, stony African huts and Pinnacle Rock, a soaring quartzite column. Activities in the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve include hiking, horse riding, hot-air ballooning, white water rafting, kloofing and boat trips on the Blyde Dam.

A stirring panorama – God’s Window – A short drive from the Blyde River Canyon, you’ll find God’s Window, an extraordinary viewpoint that sweeps right across the Lowveld. On a clear day, you can see beyond the iconic Kruger National Park to Mozambique. Verdant indigenous forest, cascading waterfalls and lofty cliffs create an ethereal atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for reflection and inspiration. God’s Window is also an unforgettably impressive setting for declarations of love and proposals of marriage! Walking trails that range from easy to moderate, allow you to fully immerse yourself in this paradise.

A step back in time – Pilgrim’s Rest – This entire village with its enchanting Victorian architecture is a South African national monument standing in testimony to the country’s heady gold rush days of the late 19th Century. The history is fascinating with tales of fortunes found and lost, and dreams made and broken. A stroll through the streets lined with shops and museums evokes the excitement and challenges faced by the gold prospectors of yesteryear. You will find a choice of charming restaurants and cafés, pubs and shebeens, and enjoy shopping for books and collectibles, arts and crafts, and handmade curios and gifts.

Beautiful hotel with a beautiful structure that gives the impression of being suspended in the trees. The decoration is superb and the location, right in front of Kruger National Park, is exceptional.
The table is excellent, with high quality dishes.
The staff is very welcoming and particularly attentive.
A truly memorable experience!

I could not recommend the Kruger Gate Hotel more! Our experience from start to finish was flawless. We were greeted at Skukuza airport and driven through Kruger National Park to get to the hotel. That meant that even our taxi journey to the hotel featured animal sightings. The staff at the hotel were so efficient and got us checked in so quickly, even though we were a large family/friends group. We stayed for four nights and decided to do 1x full day safari, 1x morning safari and 1x afternoon safari. This allowed us to explore the National Park but also enjoy the beautiful facilities at the hotel. The safaris were excellently organised and the guides were incredible. We saw 4 out of the big 5 (sadly no leopards, although we had two very near misses where we had just missed a leopard sighting) and countless other animals. In our down time we enjoyed the three swimming pools, one of which overlooked the river and where we could see elephants on the opposite banks, and our wonderful rooms. The group was split between Deluxe Rooms and the self catering chalets. The rooms were stunning and the chalets were excellent for larger groups. The food was AMAZING! Every night we were treated to an extensive buffet in the boma with amazing singing. The ambience was incredible. On the two mornings we weren\'t on game drives we enjoyed the buffet breakfast, which was also delicious. While there a large number of our group booked treatments at the spa, which we all raved about. The trip was to celebrate my 30th Birthday and we were a large group visiting from the UK. I would like to thank everyone at the Kruger Gate Hotel for making our stay so special. I really hope that I return again in the future. Thank you again!
