The Best Time to Visit Africa Isn't When You Might Think

The best time to visit Africa is simply when you are ready to answer its call.

For those planning to travel to Africa, the question of when to go is often top of mind. Many believe there is a single “best” season for a safari, but the truth is far more magical. Every season in the African bush, especially here at the gateway to the Kruger National Park, offers a unique and captivating character. The best time to visit Africa might just be the season you least expect.

When visiting Africa, it’s not about choosing a “good” or “bad” time; it’s about choosing the experience that calls to you. Let’s explore the distinct wonders that each season brings to our doorstep.

The dry season: A time of golden landscapes and abundant sightings

Typically spanning from May to October, the dry winter season is renowned for its exceptional game viewing. As seasonal water sources recede, wildlife naturally congregates around the permanent rivers and waterholes, making them easier to find. The bush thins out, with trees losing their leaves, which creates clearer lines of sight for spotting that leopard lounging in a tree or a herd of elephants on the move.

The days are pleasantly mild and filled with sunshine, while the evenings bring a crisp coolness, perfect for gathering around a crackling fire after your game drive in the Kruger. The air is clear, the skies are a brilliant blue, and the sunsets paint the horizon in fiery strokes of orange and red. This season offers that classic, golden-hued safari landscape many dream of when planning their vacation in Africa.

The wet season: The season of new life and lush scenery

From November to April, the summer rains arrive, transforming the landscape into a vibrant, emerald-green paradise. This “green season” is a time of renewal and abundance. The air is alive with the chorus of insects and birds, and the bush is lush and full.

This is the birthing season for many antelope species, which means the plains are dotted with wobbly-legged young—a truly heart-warming sight. Of course, this abundance of new life also creates more dynamic interactions with predators, offering dramatic scenes for the patient observer. For birdwatching enthusiasts, this is the ultimate time to travel to Africa. Migratory birds arrive in their thousands, filling the air with colour and song. The afternoon thunderstorms are a spectacle in themselves, clearing the air and leaving behind the rich, earthy scent of rain on African soil.

The Kruger Gate Hotel is perfectly positioned to offer incredible safari experiences year-round, allowing you to witness these seasonal transformations firsthand.

So, when should you plan your vacation in Africa?

The ideal time for visiting Africa truly depends on what you wish to see and experience.

  • For classic, high-density game viewing and cooler weather, the dry season offers fantastic opportunities.
  • For breathtaking green landscapes, newborn animals, and spectacular birding, the wet season is an unforgettable choice.

Ultimately, the African bush is always ready to put on a show. Whether you are sipping a cool drink by the pool in the summer heat or enjoying a coffee on a brisk winter morning before a drive, the magic is always here. The best time to visit Africa is simply when you are ready to answer its call.

I have been coming to the Kruger Gate hotel Since I was four years old and it has been the highlight of my year ever since.

My sister got married here and it was such an amazing wedding.

The views are incredible, the food is delicious and the rooms are impeccable. The comfiest beds I have ever slept in.

The staff are so friendly and welcoming. I have known Mishack since I was little and every time is so amazing to catch up with him. He went from making me vanilla milkshakes as a little kid to making me amazing cocktails as an adult. The last time I was there myself and my partner had a private dinner which was so amazing we had to have another! Zenda and Tsephe truly made it so special for us. The dinners in the Lapa is one my highlights as we always spot monkeys and sometimes if we are lucky a residential Genet. Samarina was so kind as to reserve a table for us every night at our favourite spot.

I could not recommend this place any higher as it truly is life changing!

An exceptional experience in a beautiful hotel. Staff went out of their way to make our stay a memorable one.

The rooms are beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean with comfortable beds, spacious living area, great en suite bathroom with wonderfully big showers.

Food was exceptional at the Lapa restaurant in the evening, with tables set around the fire pits and a fabulous array of local and international dishes to choose from at the buffet. Breakfast, served at the indoors restaurant, had everything you could imagine to the highest standard.

Overall, the ambience is what truly makes it; just amazing. 10 out of 10.
