Big Five safari: Why Kruger National Park is the ultimate summer holiday destination

It’s easy to associate summer holiday with sun, sand, sea and surf.

But for those seeking a different kind of magic, a summer safari in the Kruger National Park promises to be an unforgettable experience.

Far from being an off-season choice, a summer visit to Kruger is a rich, rewarding and often underrated adventure. Expect to see some of the wildest Kruger sightings!

Beautiful blooms

Summer in Kruger is the “green season” as rains breathe life into the bushveld and the Park morphs into a tapestry of green, with colourful blooms in between.

It’s a time of renewal and abundance, and it can feel like a completely different experience when you visit Kruger National Park in the summer season, as opposed to the dry winter season. It’s equally magnificent and we always recommend that guests who visit in winter return in summer to see the “other side” of the Park.

Early morning tends to be the best time for a guided safari tour in summer. Do look out for the many migratory species of birds that start to make their way back to the area in early summer. The Kruger National Park birds are reason enough to visit, as it is home to over 500 different species.

Circle of life

Perhaps the most compelling reason to visit Kruger in the summer is the opportunity to witness new life. It’s one of the many reasons the Park is a top safari destination. It’s the birthing season for many of the park’s herbivore species, which means the plains are filled with newborn impala, wildebeest and zebra.

Animal behaviour, too, is fascinating to observe in Kruger National Park during summer. Thanks to an abundance of food and water brought on by the rain, there’s a chance of seeing elephants enjoying refreshing mud baths, hippos splashing in waterholes, or predators taking advantage of the lush vegetation to ambush their prey.

The presence of young prey also increases predator activity, offering incredible opportunities to witness thrilling hunts and learn about the delicate balance of the wild.

Sensory sensations

Summer in parts of South Africa, the Kruger National Park included, is synonymous with dramatic thunderstorms. These awe-inspiring displays of nature’s power are a highlight of the season.

The summer climate, with its warm days and afternoon thunderstorms, adds to the sensory richness of the safari. The smell of the wet earth, the sound of rain on the leaves, and the feel of a cooling breeze are all part of the unique experience. While the heat and humidity can be intense, it’s a small price to pay for the unparalleled beauty and abundance of summer.

Right after a storm, one of the best places to be is in our Pool Bar and Viewing Deck that overlooks the iconic Sabie River. The earth has been saturated with water, there’s that delightful smell of rain in the air and an unmistakable feeling of freshness that is simply magical. Experience this with a glass of your favourite tipple in hand – few things compare!

Take your time

To truly appreciate a safari, you need more than just a quick weekend. The extended summer break is among the best times to visit Kruger with family. It is the perfect time to not only immerse yourself in the wonders of the Kruger National Park but also to explore some of the dynamic Mpumalanga tourism attractions.

For breathtaking scenery, head to the Panorama Route, which winds around the dramatic Blyde River Canyon, the world’s third-largest canyon. Here, you’ll find iconic viewpoints like God’s Window, a majestic cliff offering a 700-meter drop and views that can stretch all the way to Mozambique on a clear day. The Three Rondavels, a series of impressive geological formations resembling traditional thatched huts, are also a sight to behold.

For a unique adventure, don’t miss the Graskop Gorge Lift, Africa’s first of its kind. This glass-fronted elevator takes you 51 meters down into the ancient Afromontane Forest, providing a new perspective on the region’s diverse flora.

The area is also dotted with stunning waterfalls, each with its own charm. Be sure to visit Bridal Veil Falls, named for its delicate appearance; the powerful Mac-Mac Falls; and the beautiful Berlin Falls. For a journey into the earth, explore the ancient Echo Caves and the Sudwala Caves, which are believed to be among the oldest in the world.

Bring the whole family

For many South African families, the summer break is the most important holiday of the year and a time dedicated to being together. A safari holiday offers a unique experience that appeals to all ages, making it the perfect destination for a multi-generational family holiday. The thrill of spotting wildlife in Kruger National Park is an adventure that captivates both children and adults alike.

Summer is the perfect time for a family safari. You can begin your day with an early guided safari, then spend the afternoon relaxing by one of our pools or enjoying a cool siesta in your air-conditioned suite. Kruger National Park wildlife is truly magical in the summer and should be at the top of every family’s travel bucket list.

A summer safari combines exhilarating wildlife encounters with plenty of opportunities for relaxation and quality time, ensuring a memorable holiday for every member of the family.

Amazing hotel. We absolutely loved our stay. Room was modern, clean and spacious. The breakfast buffet was great but the dinner buffet was simply outstanding. The staff are all so friendly, yet professional. And the pool deck is wonderful. I will definitely stay here again.
