A young lady smiling and holding a camera on safari for Kruger Gate Hotel reviews

Kruger Gate Hotel consistently earns high praise from guests for its prime location at the Paul Kruger Gate, the main entrance to Kruger National Park, combined with luxury accommodation, exceptional dining, and personalised service. Kruger Gate Hotel reviews highlight the immersive African bush atmosphere, modern comforts, and direct access to one of Africa’s greatest wildlife destinations as standout features.

Why Kruger Gate Hotel reviews matter for a safari stay

Choosing a luxury safari hotel in Kruger National Park is a considerable investment. The experience extends far beyond a comfortable bed, unlike a city hotel. It includes wildlife proximity, atmosphere, service culture, and dining quality.

Kruger Gate Hotel reviews paint a consistent picture: a property that genuinely delivers on its promise as one of the best Kruger National Park hotels, positioned at the very entrance to South Africa’s most celebrated game reserve, spanning the Limpopo and Mpumalanga regions.

Location: The most praised feature across reviews

Guests repeatedly single out the location as the defining advantage of Kruger Gate Hotel South Africa.

The hotel sits directly at the Paul Kruger Gate, on the banks of the Sabie River, around a minute’s drive from the park entrance. Reviewers describe waking up to bush sounds, spotting wildlife from the property’s infinity pool and viewing deck, and feeling genuinely immersed in the African wilderness without sacrificing comfort.

One recurring theme: guests appreciate that the transition from hotel to park is effortless. There is no long transfer, no logistical complexity. You are already there.

This positioning makes Kruger Gate Hotel particularly attractive to international travellers arriving from Johannesburg or Cape Town who want ready access to the bush experience upon arrival, and it is a key reason the property consistently ranks among the best Kruger National Park accommodation offerings for both first-time visitors and seasoned safari-goers.

Dining reviews: Kruger Gate Hotel restaurants and bars

Food and beverage experiences receive strong mentions across Kruger Gate Hotel reviews, with several distinct venues each playing a different role in the guest day.

  • Kudyela Restaurant is the hotel’s breakfast venue, served daily from 06:30 to 10:30 in an outdoor terrace setting within the riverine forest canopy, with contemporary indoor seating as an alternative. Guests highlight the health range of choices, fresh pastries, made-to-order eggs, and the wildlife sightings map where guests pin their Big 5 spots from the terrace. Guests on early morning safaris can arrange a packed breakfast from reception the evening before.
  • Pool Bar & Viewing Deck runs all day, from 07:00 to 22:00, serving wood-fired pizzas, flame-grilled burgers, gourmet sandwiches and salads, set right on the bank of the Sabie River. Reviewers describe watching elephants, buffalo and hippo from their loungers while enjoying lunch or sundowners.
  • Lapa Restaurant is the hotel’s dinner venue, open from 18:00 to 21:30. Guests describe fireside buffet dining around a central fire pit, with a sizzling braai grill, a rotating five-day menu of local and international dishes, and weekend Shangaan-Tsonga and Swati drumming, song and dance. It is a dining experience that guests frequently cite as a trip highlight.
  • Shilovo Bar offers an indoor-outdoor lounge built around a Jackalberry tree, open 10:00 to midnight, popular for a pre-dinner whiskey or a nightcap of Amarula after the Lapa experience.
  • Kruger Coffee Shop, open from 05:00, serves speciality coffees, teas and grab-and-go food near reception for guests heading out on early safaris.
  • Private Dining and the River Boma take the experience further still. Riverside pods on the Viewing Deck and the River Boma itself can be booked for exclusive occasions. The River Boma is reached via a secure hotel walkway and set within Kruger National Park’s big game territory, river sand underfoot, with a ranger accompanying guests throughout. It’s bookable for private dining and events for groups of 20 or more, and reviewers describe it as unlike anything else nearby. Several international reviewers note that the River Boma experience alone justifies the stay, and for many, it is what elevates Kruger Gate Hotel above comparable best Kruger National Park hotels in the region.

In-room dining is also available from 06:30 to 21:00 for guests who prefer to relax in their room after a day on safari.

The spa: A recurring highlight in guest feedback

The Treetop African Spa appears regularly in positive reviews of the Kruger Gate Hotel safari experience, particularly from couples and leisure travellers.

Guests describe treatments that draw on African botanical traditions, delivered by skilled therapists in a tranquil, elevated setting surrounded by trees that complements the wider bush atmosphere. Reviewers note that the spa feels like an integral part of the retreat experience rather than an add-on.

Common guest observations include:

  • Treatments tailored to individual needs
  • A calm, unhurried atmosphere
  • Locally sourced, plant-based products with African heritage ingredients
  • Skilled, professional therapists

The spa consistently tips the balance toward Kruger Gate Hotel over comparable properties in the region for guests combining safari with relaxation.

Wildlife access: Setting honest expectations

A substantial portion of Kruger Gate Hotel safari reviews address wildlife, and it is worth addressing this honestly, as the hotel does.

Kruger Gate Hotel is positioned at the entrance to one of Africa’s most biodiverse national parks. Guests frequently mention spontaneous sightings from the hotel grounds and immediate surroundings, including from the infinity pool and viewing deck. However, wildlife sightings within the park itself are never guaranteed; they depend on seasonal animal movement, time of day, and natural behaviour.

Guests who approach their stay with this understanding consistently report higher satisfaction.

How the hotel handles service: What reviewers say

Service quality is a defining factor in luxury hospitality, and Kruger Gate Hotel’s review scores across major platforms reflect a strong, consistent standard. The hotel currently holds a 4.6-star rating on Google (2,000+ reviews), 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor (1,900+ reviews), and 4.6 on Booking.com (2,100+ reviews), alongside an official 4-star grading from the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA). Kruger Gate Hotel was also named a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice “Best of the Best” winner.

Guests describe staff as genuinely warm, knowledgeable about the region, and proactive in anticipating needs. Several reviews mention specific staff members by name, a strong indicator of personal, memorable service rather than transactional hospitality.

Corporate guests using the events facilities note that the team is particularly well-organised, with seamless transitions between business sessions and leisure activities, a key requirement for successful “bleisure” travel.

How to get the most from your stay: A practical guide

Based on patterns across Kruger Gate Hotel reviews, here is a step-by-step approach to maximising your experience at one of the best Kruger National Park hotels.

Book accommodation that matches your group

Couples benefit from a Deluxe King or Luxury Room. Families should look at the Deluxe Family rooms or self-catering chalets. Corporate groups should coordinate with the events team early.

Reserve River Boma dining in advance

The River Boma is in high demand, particularly during peak travel periods, and is bookable for private groups of 20 or more. Guests who pre-book consistently rate their dining experience higher than those who arrive without a reservation.

Schedule spa treatments on arrival day

Many guests wish they had booked the spa earlier in their stay. Scheduling a treatment for your first evening helps decompress after travel and sets the tone for the visit.

Enter the park early

Kruger National Park gates open at sunrise. Guests who self-drive into the park during early morning hours report the most rewarding Kruger Gate Hotel safari experiences. The hotel’s proximity means you can be at the gate within minutes of departure.

Embrace the full property experience

Several reviews note that guests who spent time on the hotel grounds, at the pool, at the Lapa, on their patio, had richer experiences than those who treated the hotel purely as a base. The property itself is part of the destination.

The verdict: What the reviews collectively say

Across platforms and guest profiles, couples, families, international tourists, and corporate groups, Kruger Gate Hotel reviews converge on a consistent conclusion.

This is a property that earns its strong review scores through genuine delivery: luxury safari access without the isolation of a remote bush camp, combined with outstanding dining, a world-class spa, and a location at the Paul Kruger Gate that few properties in Kruger National Park South Africa can match.

The guest record is clear: Kruger Gate Hotel earns its reputation for travellers seeking the best Kruger National Park accommodation with the assurance of high-end comfort and personalised service.

Guest Reviews

(Translated by Google) The hotel is located right by the Kruger Gate, making it very easy to get into the park for safaris. From the pool bar, you can look directly out onto the Sabie River, where you can often spot various animals such as elephants and hippos – a real highlight.

The rooms were lovely, well-maintained, and clean, and the beds were very comfortable. The only minor drawback was the bathroom ventilation, which wasn't very good.

The breakfast buffet is very extensive and offers something for everyone; it was delicious.

Another highlight is the evening buffet. The atmosphere in the restaurant, with its fire, is incredibly cozy, and there's a local band playing every evening for entertainment, which was very cool and interesting. The food selection is huge and of very high quality.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this hotel; it was a wonderful and unforgettable stay.

The property is built to a high standard and in a very stylish african way. It is well maintained and clean.

For dinner, you can choose between the buffet at the Lapa Restaurant or the optional private dining hut, where you can enjoy both the excellent food and the wonderful atmosphere.

The staff are friendly and attentive.

The pool overlooking the Sabi River is definitely one of the highlights. From your sun lounger, you can spot wildlife throughout the day, which makes the experience even more special.

Both the breakfast and dinner buffets are extensive, beautifully presented and delicious.

A visit is definitely recommended

We've an amazing experience with them!!

A well run hotel, providing easy of access to the early morning game drives with the advantage of a decent stay and evening meal compared to most of the safaris with glamping/camping offerings.
Sorry to have missed out on the breakfast for 5 of the 7 nights stayed due to the early start… but then again one can’t really get the best of both worlds.

We stayed at this hotel in early September. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The rooms were very clean and cozy with a comfortable bed and a warm blanket. The hotel overlooks the park and various animals—such as antelopes, elephants and different birds visit the pool area during the day. The breakfast and dinner spreads offered a great variety of dishes. For a morning safari we were provided with a breakfast box containing yogurt with muesli, sandwiches (there is choice to order), fruit, snacks, juice; there was more than enough food. The dinners by the campfire were magnificent. We booked both morning and afternoon safaris through the hotel and they were fantastic. Our guide was wonderful—he did his best to ensure we got the best photos and saw as much wildlife as we could; a special thanks to him for that! Monkeys visited the pool area in the mornings. Only positive impressions of the hotel! Thank you to all the staff for a wonderful stay!

Absolutely fantastic place and stay. Lovely reception, nice room, really delicious and varied food - (though the lunch box sandwich was unusually hard every day) more than ordinary fantastic view. All staff were sweet, smiling, and helpful. Cozy with entertainment in the evening. Thanks

The property sits on the edge of the park providing easy access to the Safari drives without having to stay in a campsite or even glamping….
A decent buffet awaits at the end of each day along with proper rooms and staying facilities.
Breakfast is also served however on safari days it’s sadly missed due to the early start, the packed breakfast does not come up to the breakfast missed out… a compromise at the end of the day.

Wish we could have spent more than one night! We treated ourselves to end off our anniversary trip to Kruger and we’re so glad we did.

This is an immaculate hotel with the very best and friendliest team. Give every single one of them a raise!

An excellent bush lapa dinner (braaibroodjies are a must!) and an equally fantastic breakfast buffet.

While I will continue to encourage international visitors to spend a few nights inside the park at one of its special rest camps, I will now recommend that they ALSO spend a few nights at Kruger Gate Hotel if they are able, to experience the best of both.

Loved it all!

Kruger was the best experience ever! Our safari guide, Famous Amos was very knowledgeable and guided us to the African Big Five:)

Only a year and a month had passed, and there I was again, sitting on the terrace of the Kruger Gate Hotel next to the amazing Infinity Pool—though this time I didn’t go for a swim 😊. Instead, I sat on the deck and worked on my computer; there was no other choice ☹. But that didn’t stop me from enjoying a few wonderful moments once again at this fantastic open-air hotel. Looking up from the monitor every now and then, picking up my binoculars, and admiring the view of elephants, hippos, buffalo, nyallas, and other iconic African animals wasn’t a problem at all, even while working. I just had to, as always, watch out for the crafty vervet monkeys, who don’t hesitate to seize any opportunity to steal some food from an inattentive hotel guest 😊. I’d like to point out once again that this is an open-air hotel, so it’s common to encounter wild animals right on the premises. That, too, adds to the hotel’s African authenticity. And that’s exactly what I like. But to get back to my work sessions on the deck I’ll remind you again that the hotel is located on the banks of the Sabie River—that is, right on the border of Kruger National Park—and is surrounded on all other sides by private game reserves. This means it’s literally surrounded by the African wilderness, with everything that comes with it. So the aforementioned delight of watching the animals takes place right on the banks of this legendary river—or, rather, right in it. I’ve spent many days at the Kruger Gate Hotel, but I don’t recall ever seeing so many elephants crossing the river in both directions in a single day. Nor do I recall so many hippos and buffalo coming right up to the terrace after dark. This time I spent only one day (and one night) at the hotel, but once again, it was worth it. And I didn’t even have to go on a game drive—which I really didn’t this time; I just didn’t have time ☹.
And just as much—if not more—I’m sorry that I didn’t get to meet all the people who work at the hotel and whom I remember from the past (for example, Amos, who works as a guide taking guests on safari trips to the park for the hotel). But I’m glad I at least got to meet the general manager, Miguel. At least for a moment, since he was busy the whole time. I’d like to say hello to him and hope he enjoyed the Slovak Horalky cookies 😊. On the other hand, I once again enjoyed the excellent cuisine, which is always worth it. Speaking for myself, I can say that the culinary experiences at this hotel are unbeatable. With a buffet-style meal, it’s practically impossible to eat in moderation 😊. And when you add the evening performances by traditional African dancers to the mix, the experience goes far beyond just a culinary delight—it’s truly top-notch 😊.
If anyone wants to experience authentic African wilderness, luxurious accommodations, and fantastic cuisine all in one place, I definitely recommend the Kruger Gate Hotel. You won’t be disappointed. I’d also like to add that the friendly and helpful staff will certainly make your stay there even more enjoyable. I don’t know when I’ll return to South Africa (though I didn’t know that during any of my ten visits either), but when I do, I won’t pass up the Kruger Gate Hotel.

An unforgettable experience in South Africa and Kruger National

We have seen and experienced so much during our stay – incredible wildlife, beautiful landscapes and moments that we will remember for a very long time. Every day brought something new, and being able to see these animals in their natural environment was truly special.

I would absolutely love to come back one day. This part of South Africa has made a huge impression on me, and Kruger is a place I will never forget.

Thank you for an amazing adventure! ❤️🐘🦁🦒
Thanks to wonderful cleaning ladies , all staff in restaurants, Reception, and all functions.

Had a wonderful three night stay in this superb hotel, right on the park gates. Room was comfortable, spacious and clean. The whole hotel lends itself to the Safari experience. If Disney were to do a safari hotel it wouldn’t look this good, nor be this authentic, nor would the service be anywhere near as excellent.

A range of safari game drives can be booked through the hotel and SANParks own drives (providing access to Kruger after normal hours) will also pick you up from the hotel. Booked both group and private drives - saw the big five, plus many more, including cheetahs up very close. Most people I spoke to had seen the big five over a couple of days, even on shared drives. The advantage of a private drive is the rapport you build with the guide and - above all - control, so you can ask the driver to fill the gaps in your “must see” list, I’d recommend doing this after a shared drive. Morning drives do feel like a hunt as countless guides all race to sightings of big cats while they’re still active. All day drives allow a more relaxed pace after the initial rush. The hotel provides a packed breakfast when going out on Safari.

I looked at various options and whilst stays in private reserves have a number of advantages, the price tag is huge. Kruger Gate Hotel, for me, was a great compromise as all that separates you from the Park is the Sabi River. You do have to figure in conservation fees whenever you enter the park, including transfers from/to Skakuza Airport (easy to see why it was voted prettiest airport in the world).

Its location does mean that animals come right up to the viewing terrace/infinity pool, including buffaloes and a family of elephants while I was there.

Staff are mega friendly and helpful - cannot fault their attentiveness. They sorted out a problem quickly and even sent a complimentary bottle of wine to the room to make up for the issue.

Food is buffet-style which might not be to everyone’s liking, but there’s a massive choice and you’re sure to find something to your taste. Do watch spice levels though: I had a wors which blew my head off and I am pretty tolerant of spicy foods.

All in all, I would thoroughly recommend this hotel which gives 95% of the experience of staying on a private reserve without the price tag and feels every bit like a five star hotel.

We loved our stay at Kruger Gate Hotel. The proximity to the Paul Kruger Gate made access to the morning safaris quick and easy. The breakfast and dinner buffets were unbelievable - so much variety each day. Absolute compliments to the chefs and kitchen staff. We also loved the bar and heated pool overlooking the Sabie River where we could enjoy a cocktail while spotting wildlife on the river banks. We appreciated that there was a Bluu car hire desk at the hotel as we were able to organise our own self-drive in Kruger through them. We also went on the whole day safari from the hotel - our guide was fabulous but the prices seemed higher than other providers who would have come to pick you up so perhaps some advice to shop around.

Hotel maravilhoso.
