Paul Kruger Gate: Opening times, location & what to know

Planning a visit to Kruger National Park through Paul Kruger Gate? Discover the 2026 opening times, location, conservation fees, arrival tips and what to know before entering the park.

Paul Kruger Gate is one of the main western entrances to Kruger National Park, located on the R536 near Hazyview in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Gate opening and closing times vary seasonally, with opening generally taking place between 05:30 and 06:00 and closing between 17:30 and 18:30. Visitors should always confirm the latest times with SANParks before travelling. Conservation fees apply to visitors entering the park, and advance planning is recommended, particularly during busy periods.

Where is Paul Kruger Gate?

Paul Kruger Gate is located on the R536, approximately 12 km east of Hazyview in Mpumalanga, South Africa. It is one of the main western entrances to Kruger National Park and provides direct access to the Skukuza area, the park’s largest rest camp and administrative hub.

The gate is named after Paul Kruger, the former president of the South African Republic. The area has strong historical links to the establishment of the Sabie Game Reserve, which later became part of the foundations of Kruger National Park.

For travellers flying into the region, Skukuza Int Airport is the closest airport depending on the route taken. Travellers driving from Johannesburg can generally expect a journey of around four to five hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and stops along the way.

Paul Kruger Gate opening times 2026

Conservation fees at Paul Kruger Gate

Visitors entering Kruger National Park are required to pay a daily conservation fee, with rates determined according to visitor category.

  • South African citizens and residents qualify for the applicable local rate when they provide the required identification.
  • SADC nationals are charged according to the applicable regional tariff.
  • International visitors pay the international conservation fee.
  • Children are charged according to the applicable SANParks child tariff.

Conservation fees are subject to annual revision, so visitors should check the latest SANParks tariff before travelling rather than relying on an older rate.

Visitors who plan to enter several SANParks reserves during the year may also wish to consider whether a Wild Card offers better value for their travel plans.

How to prepare for your arrival at Paul Kruger Gate

Arriving prepared can make your entry into Kruger much easier, particularly during busy holiday periods.

Step-by-Step: Arriving at Paul Kruger Gate

  • Book accommodation in advance. Accommodation inside and around Kruger can become busy during school holidays and peak travel periods.
  • Keep your booking confirmation accessible. Have your accommodation or SANParks reservation details available when you arrive.
  • Check the latest gate times before travelling. Seasonal operating hours can change, so confirm the current schedule shortly before your trip.
  • Allow plenty of travel time. Do not plan to arrive at the gate just before closing, particularly if travelling from Johannesburg or another distant location.
  • Prepare your payment method. Check the latest SANParks payment requirements before departure and carry an alternative payment method where practical.
  • Check park regulations. Certain food items and other restricted goods may not be permitted. Review the current SANParks regulations before entering.
  • Know the speed limits. Follow all posted speed limits and park regulations once inside Kruger. Speeding can result in penalties and, more importantly, creates a safety risk for wildlife and other visitors.

Staying near Paul Kruger Gate: Your luxury base

For many visitors, the challenge is not just entering the park — it is finding accommodation that balances proximity to the gate with genuine comfort and service quality.

Kruger Gate Hotel is positioned directly adjacent to Paul Kruger Gate, making it one of the most conveniently located luxury properties in the entire Kruger region. Guests staying here walk out of their rooms into the sights and sounds of the African bush without sacrificing the amenities of a high-end hotel.

Explore our Deluxe Rooms & Suites to find the right fit for your travel party, whether you are a couple seeking a private retreat or a family requiring interconnected space and modern facilities.

The hotel’s location means guests can be at the gate the moment it opens — a significant advantage for those wanting to experience the park at first light, when wildlife activity is naturally at its peak.

Dining, wellness & more before or after the park

A day in Kruger is physically engaging. Dusty tracks, open vehicles, and hours of patient observation demand recovery time. Kruger Gate Hotel’s Kudyela Restaurant and Lapa serves cuisine inspired by African flavours and seasonal produce, offering a fitting end to a day in the bush.

For deeper restoration, the African Spa provides treatments designed to ground and revive — ideal after long hours on game drives. The spa draws on indigenous African wellness traditions and is available to both hotel guests and day visitors by appointment.

Corporate and group visits to Kruger

Kruger National Park is not only a leisure destination. An increasing number of South African and international companies are choosing the Kruger region for corporate retreats, incentive travel, and team-building experiences.

The combination of a world-class natural setting and professional conference infrastructure creates a compelling alternative to conventional urban venues. Kruger Gate Hotel’s Corporate and private functions facilities cater to groups requiring presentation technology, breakaway rooms, and catering — all within reach of the park gate.

Practical tips for Paul Kruger Gate in 2026

  •         Kruger is a year-round destination. Every season offers a distinct experience — summer brings lush vegetation and active birdlife, while the drier winter months offer clearer sightlines. There is no single “best” time to visit.
  •         Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. The park is a wild ecosystem. Encounters depend on conditions, animal movement, and patience. Manage expectations accordingly.
  •         Self-drive is the primary access method through Paul Kruger Gate. Visitors use their own vehicles or hire a car from Nelspruit or Johannesburg.
  •         Fuel up before the gate. While Skukuza has a fuel station inside the park, prices are higher and queues can be long during peak periods.
  •         Mobile connectivity is limited inside the park. Download offline maps and SANParks documentation before entering.
  •         Respect the rules. Exiting your vehicle outside designated areas is prohibited and dangerous. This applies throughout the park, including near Paul Kruger Gate.

Why Paul Kruger Gate remains the Park’s signature entrance

Among Kruger’s public entrance gates, Paul Kruger Gate is one of the park’s most important western access points. It anchors the park’s western boundary closest to the Sabie River corridor — a zone recognised for its high density of wildlife and varied landscapes.

The gate’s accessibility from major South African cities, its proximity to Skukuza’s infrastructure, and the concentration of quality accommodation in the surrounding area make it the natural starting point for most first-time and returning visitors alike.

The Kruger Gate Hotel really is the dream hotel and we honestly cannot recommend it highly enough.

From the moment we arrived, everything about our stay was outstanding. The hotel itself is beautiful and the location is simply incredible. There cannot be many places in the world where you can relax in a swimming pool while watching hippos and elephants at the watering hole. It was one of those experiences that you have to keep reminding yourself is actually real.

The food was another huge highlight. Both breakfast and dinner were incredible, with an amazing amount of choice and consistently excellent quality. Every meal felt like an experience in itself and we genuinely looked forward to seeing what was on offer each day.

The entertainment was also amazing and added so much to the whole experience. It was wonderful to feel immersed in the local culture while enjoying our evenings at the hotel. One moment that will stay with me was hearing the staff sing The Lion Sleeps Tonight while we were eating. I’ll admit, I even got a little glassy-eyed. It was such a special and unexpectedly emotional moment and perfectly captured the magic of being there.

The staff were absolutely outstanding throughout our stay. Everyone was friendly, welcoming and attentive and they all played a part in making the hotel feel so special.

We also booked our safaris through the hotel and they were incredibly well planned, exciting and undoubtedly some of the highlights of our trip.

We traveled to the Kruger Gate Hotel in August 2026 with our extended family, including a 6-year-old child and my sister and her girlfriend. The facilities are lovely, the rooms are comfortable and well outfitted, the safari experience is seamless, and the warmth of the hotel staff was particularly memorable - particularly Samaria who served us each night at dinner, our safari guides Gibson, Remember and Culture, and Sarah and Patricia who calmly and quickly helped us when baboons found their way into our room (this is wild life!). We made so many wonderful family memories here and will recommend the hotel to other friends and family.

Have already stayed 3 times and will return time after time! Every single inch of this lodge is incredible. Staff are all so helpful, friendly and genuinely interested and caring. Rooms are clean, spacious and beds are comfortable. We easily shared the bed with our toddler. The boma dinner around the campfire under the stars with African music is always such a special experience. Other than that all amenities and facilities are amazing. Fabulous value for the price you pay!

We traveled with two couples and one child, and had an incredible stay. Reservations for safaris through the hotel made the trip so easy. The accommodations were beautiful from reception to the room. The buffet for breakfast and dinner were actually the best I’ve had anywhere and I went in with lower expectations for the food but everything was fresh, huge selection, well cooked and service was great. We enjoyed the staff from Bongeka at the Safari desk to Samaria at LAPA restaurant, and our guides: Gibson, Culture and Remember who made the trip truly unforgettable.

We enjoyed a 3 night stay where we completed 2 full day safaris.
From the moment we arrived at Skukuza airport we felt so looked after. All of the staff at Kruger Gate went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, safe and relaxed.
A special shout out to our safari guides Edgar and Moses who were both incredible and offered very different experiences. We were lucky enough to view the big 5 over the two days and had some outstanding experiences. For example, Edgar took us to a viewing hut where we saw a huge heard of elephants drinking and bathing in a pool of water.
The hotel was so well organised. Breakfast was brilliant and very handy for the safaris when you were up early!
Lapa which is the hotels restaurant was outstanding! The range of foods was amazing and we couldn’t believe the quality and choice! We thoroughly looked forward to this after a long day out on safari!
100% recommend and we will absolutely be looking to visit again one day - perhaps with friends.

Harold was a great guide— incredibly knowledgeable about all aspects of Kruger. In just two days, I was able to see all the animals I wanted to see. On the last day, I saw two male lions and two leopards thanks to his decision to take a particular route. I was very happy with my experience, and Harold was a big reason why.

Totalmente recomendable.
