Top 10 Kid-Friendly Activities in Kruger National Park

A Kruger safari holiday is not just an adventure for die-hard wildlife lovers; it’s also an incredible experience for families with children.

From thrilling wildlife spotting to cultural discoveries and outdoor fun, there are plenty of kid-friendly activities in and around Kruger Park. Here are our favourites, all easily accessible from Kruger Gate Hotel:

1. Self-drive safari through Paul Kruger Gate – Set off on a self-drive safari, an exciting way to explore the wilderness at the pace that suits your family best. For one of the top children’s safari experiences, our Kudyela Restaurant will prepare packed breakfasts so that you get an early start and stop later at a scenic picnic spot. Keep an eye out for the Big 5, but don’t forget to look out for all the wildlife along the way including birds, small mammals and reptiles. Wildlife spotting with children is one of the best ways to create lasting family holiday memories.

2. Birdhides and waterholes – Introduce your children to the magic of birdwatching and quiet wildlife observation. Visting Kruger’s birdhides and waterholes along your safari route are like self-directed educational tours for kids! It provides excellent opportunities to see hippos, crocodiles, terrapins and an array of birdlife up close. It’s a great way keep kids engaged on safari and for them to learn firsthand about ecosystems and the circle of life.

3. Visit Mac Mac Falls and God’s Window – Take a short drive from Kruger Gate Hotel to explore the stunning natural beauty along the famous Panorama Route. Highlights include Mac Mac Falls, where kids can marvel at the cascading waters, and God’s Window, offering stunning panoramic views of the Lowveld. These scenic spots are ideal for stretching legs and snapping family photos.

4. Explore Graskop and Pilgrim’s Rest – Visit the charming towns of Graskop and Pilgrim’s Rest. Enjoy the famous pancakes in Graskop and explore the old-world streets of Pilgrim’s Rest, a child-friendly attraction close to Kruger that brings history to life.

5. Family swimming and pizza lunch at Kruger Gate Hotel – After exciting mornings on safari drives or touring attractions, unwind at Kruger Gate Hotel’s family swimming pool. Kids can splash and play while parents relax on shaded loungers, followed by a delicious alfresco wood-fired pizza lunch—a favourite for the whole family!

6. Tennis and volleyball at Kruger Gate Hotel – Variety is key for families on safari and it’s important for kids to have some time to be physically active. The tennis and volleyball courts at Kruger Gate Hotel provide a great way to stay entertained and get some exercise. Challenge each other to a friendly game in a beautiful garden setting.

7. Putt-Putt and outdoor chess at Kruger Gate Hotel – Mini-golf fans will enjoy the putt-putt course, perfect for some family-friendly competition. If your children enjoy strategy games, they’ll have fun playing giant outdoor chess, a unique way to relax and bond.

8. The Glass Lift Adventure – Taking an exhilarating ride in the glass lift at nearby Graskop Gorge is one of the best family adventures in South Africa. Descend into the lush bush below and explore scenic walking trails, taking in waterfalls and wildlife – a thrilling yet safe adventure for kids.

9. Shopping at curio markets – For a big change from the shopping mall, let your children pick out souvenirs at local curio markets, where they can find handcrafted toys, carved and beaded animals, and local art. It’s a great way to support local artisans while giving your young ones an engaging shopping adventure with a difference.

10. Cultural Village visits – Immerse your family in South Africa’s rich heritage with a visit to the local cultural villages. Children can engage with local presenters and artists while they experience traditional dancing, storytelling, and crafts, making it one of the most enriching, fun, family adventures on offer.

With so many child-friendly attractions in and around Kruger, your unforgettable family holiday will be packed with adventure, learning, and thrills. Whether spotting wildlife, exploring waterfalls, or enjoying games at Kruger Gate Hotel, you’ll make memories together that will last lifetimes.

Beautiful hotel situated along the Kruger park

We returned to Kruger Gate Hotel as a family (two adults, two children) for seven nights to celebrate two birthdays. Our second visit.

This is still our family favourite holiday location, even more so after a second visit.

I cannot imagine a much better place for a family holiday, couples getaway, or a solo traveller who wants to experience the highest quality and stress-free safari.

Some hopefully helpful details:

Location - directly on the edge of one of the best safari locations on earth, southern Kruger. You will see many of the \'big five\' from the hotel\'s pool area.

Staff/Atmosphere - everyone here is incredibly kind, helpful, and genuinely wants to make your stay as special as possible.

Safari - you MUST book game drives whilst you are here. We had four early morning private safaris, booked through the hotel, and one night safari booked directly with Kruger Park (they collect you from the Hotel).

Rooms - the rooms have recently been renovated and are very clean and comfortable. We had a family room which worked perfectly for four of us.

Food and drink - buffet breakfast and dinner are included in the room rate, both are excellent with lots of variety - South African themed with international alternatives too. Lunch and drinks are a la carte and are also excellent.

Value for money - just right. Everything here is high quality, but you can also enjoy yourself properly without having to worry too much about your bill at check out!

Cleanliness - perfect.

Noise level - you\'re surrounded by wildlife, so it\'s never silent (you wouldn\'t want it to be!), but it is definitely a very relaxing place to stay.

Some special mentions for some staff members:

EDGAR - we have been on safari many times, Edgar is the best guide we have ever experienced. We\'ve now had seven game drives with Edgar and every one has been spectacular. Ask for him when booking your safari.

MISHECK and ZENDA - nothing is too much trouble and they are lovely company if you want to learn more about life in this beautiful part of the world whilst enjoying some delicious poolside lunch or post-safari cocktails.

ALICK and NEO - wonderful dinner hosts in the open-air restaurant.

Overall, an amazing holiday destination.

Dit hotel is fantastisch qua ligging net aan de rand van het Krugerpark. De olifanten, buffels, zwijnen,.. komen tot aan de rand van het zwembad. Qua sfeer en gezelligheid is dit top! Vriendelijke mensen, uitstekende bediening. Een aanrader!
