Top 5 Experiences in South Africa to Combine with a Kruger Safari

The true magic of a South African holiday lies in combining the raw wilderness of a safari with the country’s other iconic attractions.

Woman on Kruger safari.

A Kruger safari is the trip of a lifetime, an unparalleled experience that allows you to tap into unspoilt natural wonders. While Kruger’s wildlife is the headline act, South Africa’s richness extends beyond the bush—offering coastal escapes, cultural gems, and culinary delights that deserve a place in your itinerary. The true magic of a South African holiday lies in combining the raw wilderness of a safari with the country’s other iconic attractions.

Here are the top 5 experiences to weave into your itinerary for a South African adventure that’s anything but ordinary.

1. Explore the cosmopolitan mother city: Cape Town

Cape Town is ranked as a top holiday destination, notably being named the Best City in the World by The Telegraph Travel Awards 2025 and by Time Out 2025. Nestled between the iconic Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, this city offers a breathtaking blend of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and world-class cuisine.

  • Ascend Table Mountain: Take a cable car to the summit for panoramic views that will leave you speechless. For the adventurous, hiking up is a rewarding challenge.
  • Journey to the Cape of Good Hope: Visit the dramatic, windswept cliffs of the Cape Peninsula, often mistakenly called the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans (that’s actually Cape Agulhas).
  • Explore the V&A Waterfront: A bustling harbour area with superb shopping, restaurants, and the departure point for ferries to Robben Island.
  • Sample the Winelands: Just a short drive from the city, the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek valleys offer some of the world’s finest wines amidst stunning mountain scenery.

Why it pairs perfectly with a Kruger safari: Cape Town provides a stunning contrast to the bush. After days of early morning game drives, you can indulge in cosmopolitan dining, scenic coastal drives, and a more relaxed pace, creating a perfect balance for your holiday.

2. Traverse the Panorama Route’s breathtaking landscapes

If your itinerary is limited by time, opt to make the most of the attractions near the Kruger National Park. Located on the way to Kruger National Park’s southern gates, the Panorama Route is a spectacular detour through the Mpumalanga escarpment. This is a journey through some of South Africa’s most dramatic and photographed landscapes.

  • Blyde River Canyon: The world’s largest green canyon offers awe-inspiring vistas. The Three Rondavels, three towering rock formations resembling traditional huts, are a iconic sight.
  • God’s Window: On a clear day, this viewpoint offers a seemingly endless view over the Lowveld forests, all the way to the Kruger Park itself.
  • Bourke’s Luck Potholes: These fascinating cylindrical rock sculptures, carved by centuries of water erosion, are a geological wonder.
  • Lisbon Falls and Berlin Falls: Witness the power and beauty of these magnificent waterfalls cascading into lush forest pools.

Why it pairs perfectly with a Kruger safari: The Panorama Route seamlessly integrates into your travel day to or from Kruger. It shifts the focus from wildlife to grand, geological splendour, showcasing a completely different facet of South Africa’s natural beauty.

3. Discover the historical and foodie hub in Johannesburg

Often used as a transit hub, Johannesburg deserves more than a fleeting visit. It’s the vibrant, beating heart of the nation’s economy and a city shaped by it’s pivotal role in the journey from apartheid to unity.

  • Apartheid Museum: A powerful and moving experience that provides essential context for understanding modern South Africa.
  • Constitution Hill: A former prison complex that now houses the Constitutional Court, telling a story of injustice and the triumph of human rights.
  • Soweto Tour: A guided tour of the Soweto township offers incredible insight into the resilience of its community and visits landmarks like Vilakazi Street, the former home of Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.
  • Maboneng Precinct: Explore this rejuvenated inner-city neighbourhood, a hub for artisanal cafes, trendy art galleries, and a vibrant creative scene.

Why it pairs perfectly with a Kruger safari: Johannesburg adds a crucial cultural and historical depth to your trip. It connects the ancient drama of the wild with the very recent, human drama that shaped the country, offering a more complete and meaningful travel experience.

4. Indulge in a luxury bushveld retreat at the Kruger Gate Hotel

While a Kruger safari itself is the main event, where you choose to stay can elevate it from a great holiday to an extraordinary one. After a long day exploring the park, having a sanctuary of comfort and luxury to return to is priceless.

The Kruger Gate Hotel provides just that. Located a mere minute from the Paul Kruger Gate, it offers unparalleled access to the park’s premier game-viewing areas while providing a haven of five-star comfort. Its amenities are designed to complement your safari adventure perfectly. You can relax by the pool while listening to the sounds of the bush, enjoy a treatment to soothe muscles tired from game drives, and dine on superb cuisine under the African stars. The hotel’s style blends contemporary luxury with authentic safari lodge elements, creating an atmosphere that is both sophisticated and deeply connected to its wild surroundings.

5. Experience the coastal beauty of the Garden Route

For those with more time, the Garden Route is a magnificent coastal road trip stretching from Mossel Bay to Storms River. It’s a lush region of forests, lakes, and dramatic coastline.

  • Knysna Heads: Two dramatic sandstone cliffs guarding the entrance to the Knysna Lagoon.
  • Tsitsikamma National Park: A coastal park with incredible hiking trails, suspension bridges, and the chance to see dolphins and whales.
  • Oudtshoorn: Venture slightly inland to the Klein Karoo to visit ostrich farms and the magnificent Cango Caves.
  • Adrenaline Activities: This is the adventure capital of South Africa, offering everything from bungee jumping off the Bloukrans Bridge to treetop canopy tours.

Why it pairs perfectly with a Kruger safari: Combining a Kruger safari with the Garden Route offers the ultimate “Bush and Beach” holiday. You get the thrill of the African wild alongside the serenity of the coast, forests, and mountains, catering to every type of traveller.

By blending your Kruger safari with one or more of these incredible experiences, you will not just see South Africa; you will live it, creating memories that are as diverse and vibrant as the country itself.

I have been coming to the Kruger Gate hotel Since I was four years old and it has been the highlight of my year ever since.

My sister got married here and it was such an amazing wedding.

The views are incredible, the food is delicious and the rooms are impeccable. The comfiest beds I have ever slept in.

The staff are so friendly and welcoming. I have known Mishack since I was little and every time is so amazing to catch up with him. He went from making me vanilla milkshakes as a little kid to making me amazing cocktails as an adult. The last time I was there myself and my partner had a private dinner which was so amazing we had to have another! Zenda and Tsephe truly made it so special for us. The dinners in the Lapa is one my highlights as we always spot monkeys and sometimes if we are lucky a residential Genet. Samarina was so kind as to reserve a table for us every night at our favourite spot.

I could not recommend this place any higher as it truly is life changing!

An exceptional experience in a beautiful hotel. Staff went out of their way to make our stay a memorable one.

The rooms are beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean with comfortable beds, spacious living area, great en suite bathroom with wonderfully big showers.

Food was exceptional at the Lapa restaurant in the evening, with tables set around the fire pits and a fabulous array of local and international dishes to choose from at the buffet. Breakfast, served at the indoors restaurant, had everything you could imagine to the highest standard.

Overall, the ambience is what truly makes it; just amazing. 10 out of 10.
