Why wellness is the new luxury in safari travel

An escape to the bush, think the magnificent Kruger National Park – a top safari destination – is in many ways one of the most holistic wellness experiences travellers can plan for, combining tourism and wildlife

It’s well documented that going on holiday and spending time in nature is good for our physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

One can almost see people relax and recharge when they’re here enjoying the tranquillity of nature and the magnificence of the flora and the Big Five game animals that surround the property.

Wellness can take on many forms, but it’s hard to argue with the fact that Kruger National Park lends itself beautifully to the pursuit of wellness. From the sights, sounds and smells of the bush, to seeking out the Kruger National Park birds, to the silence and serenity that is all-encompassing, it’s about embracing the simple things, or simply about being.

Wellness, your way

Kruger Gate Hotel, specifically, has plenty of options for travellers to embrace wellness, their way. The Fitness Centre is a key amenity, available to all guests, while those who prefer a more serene form of wellness can head to Dee’s African Spa on the property. In the Fitness Centre new state-of-the-art equipment sits in a thoughtfully designed space with floor-to-ceiling windows that look out on the property’s lush garden, ensuring an experience that engages all the senses.

The spa, meanwhile, offers a menu of signature spa treatments, all with a uniquely African flair. Its location is stellar, with views over the Sabie River in the iconic Kruger National Park, and its offering is word-class, having recently been acknowledged as a finalist in the 2025 Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards in the Safari Spa Category.

Owned and run by Dineo Molefe, the spa is a labour of love, a place where Dineo and her team work to create a sanctuary of wellness and relaxation for others, drawing their inspiration from nature, for some 15 years now.

The spa started modestly with one beautifully appointed treatment room along the Sabie River but demand soon grew. Today, this is the flagship Dee’s African Spa, 100% Black women-owned and operated with five treatment rooms plus an exclusive couple’s room, a mani/pedi lounge, medicinal garden and a 21 fully trained staff.

The treatments offered by the spa are inspired by African wellness culture and traditional artefacts. For example, the Xigiya knob kiri massage uses handcrafted knob kieries to apply just the right amount of pressure to take experience from merely relaxing to truly rejuvenating.

Serenity

Serenity is at the heart of wellness – feeling calm and at ease – and comes in many formats.

A guided safari tour, for example, is one way to experience a different kind of serenity. A safari guide is a connection between the visitor and the wonders of Kruger National Park. They’re there to bring the magnificence of the landscape, the animals, the birds and the flora to life, and experiencing that close-up is one of the ultimate bucket list experiences.

Ultimately, wellness is a highly personal experience and endeavour but there is little doubt that Kruger National Park – the jewel in South Africa’s tourism crown – is a great place to relax and rejuvenate, with a focus on wellness as the ultimate luxury safari experience

We returned to Kruger Gate Hotel as a family (two adults, two children) for seven nights to celebrate two birthdays. Our second visit.

This is still our family favourite holiday location, even more so after a second visit.

I cannot imagine a much better place for a family holiday, couples getaway, or a solo traveller who wants to experience the highest quality and stress-free safari.

Some hopefully helpful details:

Location - directly on the edge of one of the best safari locations on earth, southern Kruger. You will see many of the \'big five\' from the hotel\'s pool area.

Staff/Atmosphere - everyone here is incredibly kind, helpful, and genuinely wants to make your stay as special as possible.

Safari - you MUST book game drives whilst you are here. We had four early morning private safaris, booked through the hotel, and one night safari booked directly with Kruger Park (they collect you from the Hotel).

Rooms - the rooms have recently been renovated and are very clean and comfortable. We had a family room which worked perfectly for four of us.

Food and drink - buffet breakfast and dinner are included in the room rate, both are excellent with lots of variety - South African themed with international alternatives too. Lunch and drinks are a la carte and are also excellent.

Value for money - just right. Everything here is high quality, but you can also enjoy yourself properly without having to worry too much about your bill at check out!

Cleanliness - perfect.

Noise level - you\'re surrounded by wildlife, so it\'s never silent (you wouldn\'t want it to be!), but it is definitely a very relaxing place to stay.

Some special mentions for some staff members:

EDGAR - we have been on safari many times, Edgar is the best guide we have ever experienced. We\'ve now had seven game drives with Edgar and every one has been spectacular. Ask for him when booking your safari.

MISHECK and ZENDA - nothing is too much trouble and they are lovely company if you want to learn more about life in this beautiful part of the world whilst enjoying some delicious poolside lunch or post-safari cocktails.

ALICK and NEO - wonderful dinner hosts in the open-air restaurant.

Overall, an amazing holiday destination.

This is our fourth visit to the Kruger Gate Hotel as a family. I travel internationally from the UK with work, and this hotel is my favourite worldwide. The setting is spectacular, the location is perfect, and the public areas are immersed in the environment with many areas in which to find peace and quiet. The staff are excellent, and the food is of very high quality. We self-drive the Kruger Park which is less than 5 minutes away. Overall, I can’t recommend this hotel enough. Go.

Dit hotel is fantastisch qua ligging net aan de rand van het Krugerpark. De olifanten, buffels, zwijnen,.. komen tot aan de rand van het zwembad. Qua sfeer en gezelligheid is dit top! Vriendelijke mensen, uitstekende bediening. Een aanrader!
