Kruger gate times & operating hours: 2026 full schedule

Kruger National Park gates open at 05:30 from October through March (summer) and at 06:00 from April through September (winter). The Paul Kruger Gate operates on this seasonal schedule year-round.

Kruger National Park gates open between 05:30 and 06:00 in summer and as late as 06:30 in winter, with closing times ranging from 17:30 to 18:30 depending on the month. In 2026, Kruger gate times follow SANParks’ official seasonal schedule. Missing the closing time results in a fine. Staying at Kruger Gate Hotel places you steps from the Paul Kruger Gate, eliminating any risk of being locked out.

Why Kruger gate times matter more than most visitors realise

Arriving at the wrong time is one of the most common, and costly, mistakes first-time Kruger visitors make.

SANParks enforces gate times for Kruger National Park strictly. Vehicles found inside the park after closing are fined, and repeat offences can result in a ban. Knowing the exact Kruger National Park gate times for your travel dates is not optional; it is essential planning.

This guide covers the full 2026 gate schedule, practical entry tips, and how your choice of accommodation directly affects how much of the park you actually experience.

Official SANParks Kruger gate times for 2026

SANParks adjusts Kruger National Park opening hours monthly to align with sunrise and sunset. The table below reflects the official schedule. Always verify directly with SANParks before travel, as times are subject to revision.

Key takeaway: The difference between summer and winter closing times is a full hour. You must be back at the gate by 17:30, not 18:30, if you are planning a late afternoon game drive in July or August.

The Paul Kruger Gate: Your primary entry point

The Paul Kruger Gate is the most frequently used entrance to the Kruger National Park and sits adjacent to the town of Skukuza in the Mpumalanga and Limpopo regions of South Africa.

It is the gate closest to Kruger Gate Hotel, which is positioned near the park boundary. Guests staying here can take a short transfer to the gate. There is no long early-morning drive on dark rural roads. That proximity is not a minor convenience; it is a structural advantage when you need to be through the gate at 05:30.

Other major gates and their operating hours

While the Paul Kruger Gate is the focus for guests at Kruger Gate Hotel, the park has multiple entry points across its 360-kilometre length. Understanding what time Kruger Park gates open at each entrance helps you plan your route, particularly if you are entering from the south or north.

Gate Name

Location

Notes

Paul Kruger Gate

Central West

Closest to Skukuza; busiest gate

Phabeni Gate

South West

Alternative to Numbi; less congestion

Numbi Gate

South West

Popular, can be congested on weekends (note that this gate is not recommended)

Malelane Gate

South

24-hour access; closest to southern camps

Crocodile Bridge Gate

South East

Good entry for southern game areas

Orpen Gate

Central

Access to Orpen and Satara camps

Phalaborwa Gate

North

Gateway to northern Kruger

Punda Maria Gate

Far North

Remote; far north exploration

Note: Malelane Gate operates 24 hours for transit, but standard park rules still apply inside. Source: SANParks, 2026.

All gates except Malelane follow the seasonal Kruger National Park gate times in the table above.

How to plan your gate entry without stress

Planning your Kruger entry around gate times is straightforward when you follow a structured approach.

  • Confirm your travel dates and look up the corresponding month in the schedule above. Note both the opening and closing time. Write them down or screenshot this page.
  • Factor in drive time from your accommodation to the gate. Your gate transit time is under five minutes if you are staying at Kruger Gate Hotel. Calculate travel time honestly if you are staying further away, rural roads near the park are not highways.
  • Book your conservation fee in advance. SANParks requires a valid conservation fee (daily permit) for all vehicles and passengers. You can purchase this online at sanparks.org or at the gate, but pre-booking saves time, especially during peak holiday periods.
  • Plan your return route before you leave. Decide in advance which gate you will exit through and map the drive time back. Build in a 30-minute buffer before closing time.
  • Set an alarm on your phone for 45 minutes before the gate closes. This is your signal to begin heading back. It sounds simple, it prevents fines.
  • Debrief on arrival back at your accommodation. Note what you saw, where, and at what time of day. This helps you plan subsequent drives more effectively.

The proximity advantage: Staying at Kruger Gate Hotel

Distance from the gate is one of the most underrated factors in planning a Kruger safari.

Guests who stay far from the park can sacrifice the first and last hour of the day, the two periods when wildlife is most active. A 45-minute drive to the gate at 05:30 means arriving at 06:15, already missing the prime early-morning window.

Kruger Gate Hotel eliminates that problem entirely. Our accommodation is positioned at the park boundary, meaning guests are through the Paul Kruger Gate within minutes of leaving their room.

Evenings are equally stress-free. Rather than racing back to a distant lodge before Kruger Park gate closing time, guests return to a full-service hotel experience, including dinner at our restaurants, where the menus draw on authentic African flavours in an open-air setting that captures the spirit of the bush without leaving the comfort of the property.

Conservation fees and entry requirements in 2026

Beyond gate times, entry to Kruger requires a valid conservation fee. In 2026, SANParks fees apply per person and per vehicle.

  • South African citizens and residents receive a discounted rate with valid ID.
  • SADC nationals qualify for a separate rate with passport verification.
  • International visitors pay the standard international rate.

Exact fee amounts for 2026 are confirmed by SANParks annually. Check current rates at sanparks.org or visit our Kruger Park entrance fee guide for more information before booking.

Wild Cards (SANParks annual passes) offer unlimited park access and are worth considering for visitors planning multiple Kruger trips within a 12-month period.

Before you arrive: A practical pre-visit checklist

  • Confirm Kruger gate times for your specific travel month (use the table above)
  • Purchase or pre-book your SANParks conservation fee
  • Download the SANParks app for offline maps inside the park
  • Carry sufficient water, snacks, and sun protection
  • Ensure your vehicle is fuelled, petrol stations inside the park have limited hours
  • Charge all camera equipment the night before
  • Check whether your mobile network has coverage at your chosen gate

Guests at Kruger Gate Hotel can speak with our team for destination-specific advice. Our game drives and wildlife experiences page outlines the safari options available through the hotel.

I had a wonderful stay at the Kruger Gate Hotel. The room was very nice and very comfortable with a lot of storage. The breakfast was good and the dinner buffet outdoors was excellent with many different local dishes, and amazing ambience with the fire pits and the local singers as well as the hotel staff singing ‘happy birthday’ to guests. The game drives arranged though the hotel were amazing and we saw all the Big 5 and many of the other animals and birds as well. The spa was wonderful as well. The infinity pool and viewing deck are truly amazing. As the hotel borders the Kruger National Park, we were regularly visited by elephants, nyala, water buck, and some hippos as well as a croc could be seen. The truly amazing allure to this property, however, is the staff. I cannot say enough good things about everyone. Everyone made us feel welcome and well taken care of. Special requests were honored with diligence. I would definitely book this property again.

This has been such a special family holiday with the most memorable experiences. We’re blown away by the hospitality and overall atmosphere here. We are leaving with full hearts and so grateful! My eldest daughter said today was “the best day ever”, and we all felt that way!

After a week in lodges in remote areas, we really enjoyed our almost week-long stay at the Kruger Gate Hotel. While it\'s not a small safari lodge, it is a very nice hotel a short distance away from Kruger National Park. The hotel is also very beautiful architecturally.

For us, the Kruger Park was the best of both worlds - close to safari activities, but with the conveniences that a larger hotel has to offer. I have seen complaints in other reviews that it is a bit impersonal and packaged, but we did not feel that way at all. It is big - I think they told me there were 144 rooms - but the staff took great care of us during our stay.

Breakfasts and dinners are done buffet style. We thought the quality of the food was very good except for the desserts at dinner. Game drives arranged through the hotel were excellent. The hotel has some nice amenities, like a putt-putt course and tennis courts. We enjoyed our day at the spa, the highlight of which was getting up from my massage, looking out the window, and seeing an elephant maybe 30 meters away.

We would definitely stay here again.

A comida nós amamos, tudo delicioso e fresco.
