Planning your trip starts with understanding the standard daily entry fee, a key part of the overall Kruger National Park safari cost. These fees are charged per person and apply each day you’re inside the park.

Understanding Kruger National Park safari costs

Standard daily entry fee

Between 1 November 2024 and 31 October 2025:

  • South African citizens: R128 per adult and R64 per child
  • SADC visitors: R257 per adult and R128 per child
  • International travellers: R535 per adult and R267 per child

These Kruger National Park entrance fees support conservation efforts and help maintain park facilities. These charges apply whether you drive yourself or join an organised game drive.

Managing safari costs

This daily cost can add up fast if you’re planning a multi-day safari, so budgeting accordingly is essential. Booking early is recommended, especially during school holidays or long weekends when the park often reaches full daily capacity.

Kruger Gate Hotel: An affordable stay

Where you stay can make a big difference to your Kruger National Park safari cost. Kruger Gate Hotel sits right at the iconic Paul Kruger Gate, giving guests affordable access into the park.

Hotel features

  • Spacious rooms
  • Tranquil deck for sundowners
  • Viewing platforms for wildlife sightings

This makes it a perfect base for self-drive excursions or guided trips into the park, giving you flexibility and value.

Enhancing your safari experience

Entry fees are just one part of your total Kruger National Park safari cost. If you choose to enhance your experience with guided tours, prices can range significantly.

Tour costs

  • Full-day shared game drives: R1,848 per person
  • Full-day private safari: R6,720 per vehicle

Choosing a hotel like Kruger Gate for your stay helps you manage costs without compromising on comfort or location, providing an economical and enjoyable safari experience.

Understanding Kruger National Park safari cost

Making your way to the bush? It’s crucial that you comprehend the Kruger National Park safari cost to make the optimal selection for your requirements and budget.

Cost-effective option: Self-drive safari

Another affordable option is a self-drive safari for local travellers. Costs for this method of safari (depending on the season) are as follows:

  • Entry fees for South African citizens: R128 per adult per day
  • Comfortable accommodation (near the main gate): R2,000 – R10,000 per night*

With hotels like Kruger Gate Hotel or budget lodges near Skukuza, self-drive safaris are perfect for those seeking to experience abundant wildlife without exorbitant expenses.

Packaged choices: Ranges in Kruger National Park Safari cost

While self-driving through the park offers flexibility and savings, many visitors choose booked packages for ease. Here are some cost ranges based on the level of comfort and amenities:

Luxury safari and its cost implications

Luxury multi-day safaris can cost between R12,000 and R20,000 or more per traveller* for those desiring top-tier style and service. These exclusive rates comprise:

  • Stays in upscale lodges with panoramic park views
  • All meals
  • Spa amenities
  • Private game drives

Private full-day vehicle safaris are an excellent choice for households or small groups seeking bespoke adventures. Plus, for tourists entering from the chief gate, the Kruger Gate Hotel grants effortless park access which enhances the luxury experience.

Factors affecting Kruger National Park safari cost

Your overall Kruger National Park safari cost depends on three critical parameters:

  1. Park entrance fees
  2. Type of safari
  3. Accommodation choice

Bear in mind, additional treats like sunset drives or connecting transfers can also affect your final total. Advanced booking, especially during festive seasons, is vital to securing the ideal packages and stays for your travel itinerary.

The hidden costs of your Kruger National Park safari

A trip to the African bush is more than just wildlife spotting and comfy accommodations. There are several hidden factors that contribute to your Kruger National Park safari cost.

Transport expenses

  • If you’re taking a flight to Skukuza or Nelspruit, please note that flight costs vary per season.
  • Choosing to drive from Johannesburg? Remember to add the cost of petrol, toll gates and travel snacks to your budget.
  • Some safari packages are inclusive of transfers, however, it’s better to confirm this beforehand. Kruger Gate Hotel provides transfers from various local airports including Skukuza, Kruger Mpumalanga International, O.R. Tambo International at great rates.

Upgrading your experience

  • Luxury extras like early morning bush breakfasts or scenic night drives give you an enhanced experience, but also increase the cost.
  • A relaxing message after a day of adventure sounds delightful, but it isn’t free. At Kruger Gate Hotel for instance, soothing spa treatments in the tranquil private tree-house rooms overlooking the Sabie River adds to your bill.

Food-related costs: How meals affect your safari cost

  • The type of meal package you choose can also impact your safari expenses.
  • The Kruger Gate Hotel offers options to dine under the starlit skies feasting on local grilled fare or enjoy delicious flame-grilled burgers by the pool bar.
  • Budget-conscious travelers can opt for light safari meal packs.

Other overlooked details

Even small aspects can have a big impact on your Kruger National Park safari cost:

  • Mandatory conservation fees are charged per person, per day while inside the park.
  • Gratuity costs are also worth considering as tips are part of the safari etiquette. They improve the quality of your stay and provide support for those involved in facilitating your wilderness journey.

This property is a must if you are visiting Kruger. It’s very clean and the breakfast and dinner were delicious! There are many animals found right on the property. Sarah surprised us with a wonderful gift in our room for our anniversary and our friend’s rooms as well. We also booked a safari with the hotel and saw the big 5. If you are reading this, book now and you will not regret it.

(Translated by Google) A superb hotel, located right next to the park. We were lucky enough to be able to observe a herd of elephants with their babies and giraffes from our pool, not even 30 meters away. The staff is super nice and friendly, and the food is incredibly delicious. The rooms are simple but very clean. We'll definitely be back. It was a wonderful stay. Thank you.

An exceptional trip at the Kruger Gate Hotel.
We were a family of nine for a great one-week stay with three safari days.
Upon arrival, we had a few technical issues with one of our rooms, but the hotel quickly managed to fix the situation.
The entire staff is amazing, everyone is very kind, but a special thanks goes to the guest manager, Sarah, who was truly wonderful and really made our week extraordinary.
Everything at the hotel is very well managed, the beds and rooms are very comfortable.
The food is excellent, and I especially recommend the private dinner, which is an incredible experience to share with family.
The safaris are very well organized, and if you’re lucky, you might even see a lion (or six).
We leave with stars in our eyes and the memory of a dream trip.
Once again, thank you to all the staff, and especially to Sarah, for her kindness and outstanding professionalism.

Awesome breakfast and dinner buffets.. nice wide spread.. all that was tried were simply very every tasty.. breakfast n dinner are at two different restaurants.. they are next to each other.. Dinners variety is very very good.. friendly staff.. There is a viewing deck where if youare lucky you can see animals at the sabie river.. we managed to see elephants and deers..
We tried the inhouse couple massage. 3-4 hours.. was amazing.. Thehotel has a mini golf course and the chest board to play.. Staff were vrey friendly and accomodating to any request..

This was our second stay at the Kruger Gate hotel - every bit as excellent as the first. Rooms are spotless, beautifully maintained, tastefully decorated and spacious, with lots of storage , power points and lighting options; beds are very comfortable.

Every member of staff we encountered, from housekeeping and cleaning crew to waitstaff, spa therapists and reception were incredibly helpful and professional.

The food included in their dinner bed and breakfast rate is still excellent value - constantly freshly made and replenished and of a far, far higher standard than is usual for a hotel buffet. Cocktails, bar drinks and food are similarly delicious (and staggeringly good value!)

The gardens and walkways are lovely, and the infinity pool was a delight. I was pleasantly surprised by the temperature when I dipped my foot in the water on the very sunny August day we arrived - but disappointingly, the the weather was too cool for me to get in the next day! Still, spending hours on the deck there watching the animal drama quietly unfold in front of us while lunching and eventually moving on to their delicious cocktails was a joy regardless

We loved our stay at Kruger Gate. The location is fantastic and our overall experience was amazing. Our kids loved the pool and the wildlife around the hotel. The viewing deck brought us up close and personal with elephants. The facilities and food at dinner and breakfast were excellent and the hospitality were received was world class! One of my highlights was the birthday song the restaurant staff sang to me at dinner. We will definitely go back.

We found Kruger Gate Hotel to be above our expectations, they were really accommodating, and the accommodations were beautiful, clean and with a clear attention to detail. The entire resort provides a great atmosphere for relaxation, rejuvenation and being an excellent location for entry into Kroger. We would definitely recommend this to others, especially those who only have one day, like it\'s, so they can afford the price and make their one night stay extremely worthwhile!
