Kruger in December is a feast for the senses: rich greenery, breathtaking skies, and wildlife buzzing with energy. Visitors can expect warm, sunny days and gentle nights as South Africa’s summer safari season reaches its peak. The Kruger Park rainy season brings short but spectacular afternoon thunderstorms that turn the landscape into a vibrant green haven. While the rain adds a sense of adventure, mornings are usually crystal clear, perfect for early game viewing.

This guide explores everything you need to know about visiting Kruger in December: what the weather is like, what to pack, and which activities you simply can’t miss during this lively summer season.

What makes Kruger in December so unique?

Abundant wildlife & the South African summer weather baby boom

Despite the thicker vegetation of the rainy season, the Kruger National Park in December offers some of the most exciting wildlife encounters of the year. Water sources brim with life, drawing elephants, antelope, and large herds of grazers to open plains and riverbanks.

December is also the heart of baby season. Expect to see newborn impala wobbling through the grass, young zebra and wildebeest stumbling after their mothers, and predators taking advantage of the increased hunting opportunities. Birdlife is outstanding too, with migratory species arriving in colourful flocks. Learn more about Kruger in December by reading: Why Kruger National Park is the ultimate summer holiday destination.

Top Kruger activities in December include:

  • Early morning guided safaris
  • Self-drive routes along river loops
  • Unmatched bird-viewing/photography along lush woodland paths
  • Afternoon safaris to catch thrilling sightings

Best times for game viewing

Start your day early for the most rewarding sightings. Morning drives offer bright skies, pleasant temperatures, and heightened movement of animals, ideal for spotting elephants, predators, and migratory birds.

Evenings are just as magical. Once the sun sets, guided night drives (available through SANParks) reveal a different side of Kruger, where porcupines, genets, hyenas, owls, and other nocturnal species emerge in the cool night air.

We returned to Kruger Gate Hotel as a family (two adults, two children) for seven nights to celebrate two birthdays. Our second visit.

This is still our family favourite holiday location, even more so after a second visit.

I cannot imagine a much better place for a family holiday, couples getaway, or a solo traveller who wants to experience the highest quality and stress-free safari.

Some hopefully helpful details:

Location - directly on the edge of one of the best safari locations on earth, southern Kruger. You will see many of the \'big five\' from the hotel\'s pool area.

Staff/Atmosphere - everyone here is incredibly kind, helpful, and genuinely wants to make your stay as special as possible.

Safari - you MUST book game drives whilst you are here. We had four early morning private safaris, booked through the hotel, and one night safari booked directly with Kruger Park (they collect you from the Hotel).

Rooms - the rooms have recently been renovated and are very clean and comfortable. We had a family room which worked perfectly for four of us.

Food and drink - buffet breakfast and dinner are included in the room rate, both are excellent with lots of variety - South African themed with international alternatives too. Lunch and drinks are a la carte and are also excellent.

Value for money - just right. Everything here is high quality, but you can also enjoy yourself properly without having to worry too much about your bill at check out!

Cleanliness - perfect.

Noise level - you\'re surrounded by wildlife, so it\'s never silent (you wouldn\'t want it to be!), but it is definitely a very relaxing place to stay.

Some special mentions for some staff members:

EDGAR - we have been on safari many times, Edgar is the best guide we have ever experienced. We\'ve now had seven game drives with Edgar and every one has been spectacular. Ask for him when booking your safari.

MISHECK and ZENDA - nothing is too much trouble and they are lovely company if you want to learn more about life in this beautiful part of the world whilst enjoying some delicious poolside lunch or post-safari cocktails.

ALICK and NEO - wonderful dinner hosts in the open-air restaurant.

Overall, an amazing holiday destination.

This is our fourth visit to the Kruger Gate Hotel as a family. I travel internationally from the UK with work, and this hotel is my favourite worldwide. The setting is spectacular, the location is perfect, and the public areas are immersed in the environment with many areas in which to find peace and quiet. The staff are excellent, and the food is of very high quality. We self-drive the Kruger Park which is less than 5 minutes away. Overall, I can’t recommend this hotel enough. Go.
