Kruger Park Packing List: Checklists for Summer & Winter Safaris

Get ready for your Kruger Park safari all year round. Use our simple checklists and seasonal packing tips to make every trip effortless.

Recognised as one of the popular family holiday destinations in Skukuza, Kruger Gate Hotel has now expanded its Pool Bar and Viewing Deck, giving guests even more space to unwind while taking in the incredible surroundings.

Planning a trip to the magnificent Kruger National Park is an exciting adventure, but knowing exactly what to put in your suitcase can be a challenge. The success of your game drives often hinges on being comfortable, and that starts with the right Kruger National Park packing list. Whether you are chasing the Big Five in the lush summer months or enjoying the clear skies of winter, your safari essentials for the Kruger Park don’t need to change dramatically.

We’ve put together an easy-to-follow guide to ensure you know what to wear on safari and what to pack for Kruger in summer vs winter.

Year-round Kruger safari essentials

For any Kruger adventure, you should aim for neutral colours—khaki, brown, and olive green. They help you blend into the environment and are less likely to disturb the wildlife when you’re in open-air vehicles.

Practical items for a safari holiday

  • Binoculars: This is arguably the most important item after your camera. While your guide will have a pair, having your own means you won’t miss a moment.
  • Camera gear: A camera with a good zoom lens is essential. Don’t forget extra batteries and memory cards—you’ll take more photos than you think!
  • Sun protection: Africa experiences stronger, more consistent UV radiation than Europe, the UK, and much of the US, due to its equatorial location and reduced atmospheric filtering. A wide-brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and UV-protection sunglasses are vital.
  • Insect repellent: Even in the dry winter months, it’s wise to have a stick or spray repellent for mosquitoes, which you can apply to exposed skin, especially for evening activities.
  • First aid kit: Whenever you travel, it’s always good to keep a basic kit with pain relievers and any personal medication. For a more detailed look at what to include, especially when travelling with little ones, check out our guide on Family Safari Essentials: Must-Have Gear for Kruger Adventures.

What to pack for Kruger in Summer (November – March)

Summer in Kruger is the wet season, characterised by high temperatures, lush green landscapes, and the arrival of migratory birds. If you are planning a trip during this time, for example, around December, you can expect warm, sunny days and the occasional spectacular afternoon thunderstorm.

Summer Kruger Safari Checklist

Item

Why You Need It

Lightweight, breathable fabrics (cotton/linen)

To manage the heat and humidity.

Light rain jacket or poncho

For sudden downpours.

Sandals or flip-flops for the lodge; comfortable closed shoes for drives

To keep cool and dry.

Swimsuit

Perfect for cooling off at the pool after a game drive.

When planning your itinerary, be sure to read up on the weather and activities during this period, as detailed in our article on Kruger in December: Weather, Packing Tips & Activity Planning.

What to pack for Kruger in winter (May – September)

Winter is the dry season, offering fantastic game viewing as the bush thins out and animals congregate around water sources. The temperature can fluctuate, making layering essential.

Kruger Winter Safari Checklist

Item

Why You Need It

Thermal base layers (top and bottom)

Essential for insulation during chilly early morning drives.

Warm fleece or down jacket

To be worn over your base layers and shirt.

Beanie, gloves, and a scarf/buff

Open safari vehicles can get cold.

Warm socks and closed-toe shoes/boots

To keep your feet warm and protected.

The crisp air and stunning golden light make winter a favourite for many, offering a unique experience that is further explored in our guide to June Weather in Kruger National Park. The joys of a winter safari, from birding to concentrated wildlife viewing, are truly unparalleled.

Layering clothes on safari

The golden rule for what to wear on safari is layering. Regardless of the season, good to be prepared for cooler early mornings or evenings and warm middays.

  1. Base layer: A light t-shirt or thermal top (depending on the season).
  2. Mid-layer: A long-sleeved shirt (for sun protection).
  3. Outer layer: A warm jacket (winter) or a light rain jacket (summer).

By following this simple principle, you can easily add or remove items to stay comfortable throughout your game drive.

Your ultimate safari base awaits

With your perfect Kruger National Park packing list sorted, all that remains is to choose the ideal base for your safari adventure. Beautiful hotel situated along the Kruger park

We returned to Kruger Gate Hotel as a family (two adults, two children) for seven nights to celebrate two birthdays. Our second visit.

This is still our family favourite holiday location, even more so after a second visit.

I cannot imagine a much better place for a family holiday, couples getaway, or a solo traveller who wants to experience the highest quality and stress-free safari.

Some hopefully helpful details:

Location - directly on the edge of one of the best safari locations on earth, southern Kruger. You will see many of the \'big five\' from the hotel\'s pool area.

Staff/Atmosphere - everyone here is incredibly kind, helpful, and genuinely wants to make your stay as special as possible.

Safari - you MUST book game drives whilst you are here. We had four early morning private safaris, booked through the hotel, and one night safari booked directly with Kruger Park (they collect you from the Hotel).

Rooms - the rooms have recently been renovated and are very clean and comfortable. We had a family room which worked perfectly for four of us.

Food and drink - buffet breakfast and dinner are included in the room rate, both are excellent with lots of variety - South African themed with international alternatives too. Lunch and drinks are a la carte and are also excellent.

Value for money - just right. Everything here is high quality, but you can also enjoy yourself properly without having to worry too much about your bill at check out!

Cleanliness - perfect.

Noise level - you\'re surrounded by wildlife, so it\'s never silent (you wouldn\'t want it to be!), but it is definitely a very relaxing place to stay.

Some special mentions for some staff members:

EDGAR - we have been on safari many times, Edgar is the best guide we have ever experienced. We\'ve now had seven game drives with Edgar and every one has been spectacular. Ask for him when booking your safari.

MISHECK and ZENDA - nothing is too much trouble and they are lovely company if you want to learn more about life in this beautiful part of the world whilst enjoying some delicious poolside lunch or post-safari cocktails.

ALICK and NEO - wonderful dinner hosts in the open-air restaurant.

Overall, an amazing holiday destination.

This is our fourth visit to the Kruger Gate Hotel as a family. I travel internationally from the UK with work, and this hotel is my favourite worldwide. The setting is spectacular, the location is perfect, and the public areas are immersed in the environment with many areas in which to find peace and quiet. The staff are excellent, and the food is of very high quality. We self-drive the Kruger Park which is less than 5 minutes away. Overall, I can’t recommend this hotel enough. Go.
